My roommate has watched that movie in excess of 20 times. He can quote the entire thing by heart. It's really disturbing.
-
That's pretty unfortunate. There's a radio host out here in LA (well, until tomorrow, anyway) whose name is Michael Jackson. And his son's name is Alan! At least his name isn't Michael Bolton...

Pardon my ignorance, but is the ability to do night jumps the only difference between the A and the B? Should one go straight for the C while it's still only 100 jumps?
-
I'm actually fairly certain I could come to work naked, high, and with a purple mohawk without recriminations.

My friend actually looks like Vin Diesel... And he's single... But, um, he prefers men, so I guess you're SOL. Sorry...

Er, oh... I hurt my back in a rather dramatic opening in August. It still hurts, though it's been diminishing over time. I've been avoiding going to the doctor about it. Are they treating it in any way, or do you just have to wait it out?
-
I don't think there will be any swooping involved, for a long, long time! Beer and spit are forthcoming, though. Mostly I'm looking forward to being able to jump when I get to the DZ and not having to wonder if the suitable canopies have been rented already. I'm stoked!
-
At long last, the wait is nearly over! It's been excruciating..time has slowed to a crawl these last couple of months. Finally I got word that my new canopy is heading my way! I should have it on Friday. It's a Hornet 170, in neon green and neon purple. The only bummer is that I'm leaving for 9 days on Saturday morning, so I'm not going to get the chance to jump it for a bit. Augh...

It's at the top of the list, currently, but I have a policy of not buying cars over MSRP (which is what the dealers want at the moment). I'm salivating in anticipation of the RX-8. There is also the G35 coupe. On top of that, there are the WRC-alikes on the way, the Mitsu Lancer Evo VII and the Subaru WRX STi. On the budget end, I've driven the RSX Type-S and the Mini (sadly, not the S). Both are wonderful cars, and appeal to my inner cheap-bastard. There is also the fact that there are some low mileage NSXs around. And there are other choices with their own appeals...

Woah, I didn't even think of checking Long Beach. Is it a good airport? I know Jet Blue does Oakland to Long Beach relatively cheaply.

What was your favorite movie growing up as a kid?
Scoby replied to Rookeskydiver's topic in The Bonfire
Yup, Willy Wonka was my favorite too. I read every one of Roald Dahl's books, including his autobiography. I confess that I haven't seen all of the movie adaptions, though. I truly loved James and the Giant Peach. -
I pass through Whittier on the way to Elsinore, I believe. Actually, Whittier is exactly 27 miles from both LAX and Ontario International. So it's your choice. But Ontario would probably be less hassle.

Yeah, I can see the point in that. My boss insists on driving a coupe, even though it's a huge pain in the ass getting everyone in the car. He's looking for a replacement for his 8-series, but there are almost no options right now. Basically, there is the Mercedes CL and...um, that's about it. My suggestion of a Maserati 4200GT was met with laughter. I'm at that age where I'm old enough to afford a sports car, while still young enough to enjoy one. But I'm notoriously indecisive and there are a bunch of glorious options at the moment...

Do dentists do whippets on the side? Just wondering cos I've known a couple of anesthesiologits who've had to do rehab for fentanyl addiction...

That happened to me...got the chance to get my bonuses in stock or cash. I took the cash. Everyone else thought I was nuts. I left the company, the stock went into the toilet, and I'm still laughing about it. Occasionally, I check on the company's financial performance for schadenfreude.

They have ads on TV all the time with ashamed vampires trying to sneak in. It's pretty amusing, but I've never gotten around to going there. There's one near where I work.

Even taking additional taxes into account, it doesn't make any sense. I mean, I could imagine a scenario in which someone could conceivably have a 50% tax burden, but no accountant would actually let that happen. And nobody would turn down a raise because they'd "have to pay more taxes." I call bullshit.
-
Sedan or coupe? My girlfriend is trying to get me to buy the G35 Coupe. I'm trying to hold out until the Mazda RX-8 arrives. The G35 is a truly sweet car, in either form factor. Enjoy!

Generally, we wonder if they're a closet case...

The top tax bracket is 39% and you really have to be trying hard to not avoid it. There is no 50% tax bracket. There was about twenty years ago. I think someone has been pulling your leg.
-
Well, the wealthiest 1% of the country pay 24% of the federal taxes. Horrible, huh? Until you realize that they make 19% of the total income. After you figure in the largely regressive state and local taxes, the proportion of income the wealthiest pay in taxes is pretty similar to what the lower classes pay. It's hardly redistributive. I think what people seem to miss on both ends of the spectrum, is that when it's all said and done, the tax system in the US is reasonably egalitarian. If we had a flat tax on all income with a single deduction, this would be more apparent.

Oh yeah, that reminds me... Renton: What's on the menu this evening sir? Mother Superior: Your favorite dish. Renton: Excellent. Mother Superior: Your usual table, sir. Renton: Oh, why thank you. Mother Superior: Would sir care to pay for his bill in advance? Renton: No. Stick it on my tab. Mother Superior: Ah, regret to inform, sir, credit limit was reached and breached quite some time ago. Renton: Oh, well in that case... Mother Superior: Would sir care for a starter of some garlic bread perhaps? Renton: No, thank you. I will proceed directly to the IV of hard drugs, please.

I'm a fan of Asimov's foundation/robot series. What's the name of this book? I think it was called In The Beginning. He also wrote an etymology called Words in Genesis, and two Guides to the Bible (Old and New Testaments).

Of course, if you really wanted to drive in poor conditions, you could always get a AWD car. All the traction without the high center of gravity and archaic suspension. Hence the popularity of Subarus in places where there is a lot of incelemnt weather. out here, they're only popular among lesbians and boy racers.

Does your dropzone have any other gear for you to rent? Is it the only dropzone available to you? I think it would really be a good idea to go through the sizes in a stepwise manner (270 to 230 to 210 to 190 to 170) before actually purchasing anything. My friend accidentally went from 260 to 210 in one step (the rig was on the wrong peg) and was a bit overwhelmed. Luckily, he landed fine, but he went right back up in size again. I think that a downsize from 270 to 170 in one shot would be petrifying and potentially very dangerous.
