I would go to 250, my student canopy was a 230 and it floated like crazy, so most probably will make lots of cross country and have lots of fun releasing the parachute after every landing cause that thing will carry me on my back to the next closest country. HISPA 21 www.panamafreefall.com -
I was flying my canopy all by myself cause I never did understand what I was been told in the radio, then I was looking at the windsock (the pole of the windsock is 10 feets high, flarin altitude), against the wind check! feets together Check! ok 10 feet flare... mmm... am passing the wind sock, wind sock is by my side... Oh SHIT! wind sock is behind me, what do I do? what do I do? floor comming fast, I start the flare then heard the radio yell "Don't Flare yet!" to late already flared very high, I raised my legs in horizontal position and landed on my butt. first words after the WOOHOO! was "BEER!" I used the PD 230 when I was a student, opens nice and very easy to propack. If it came with the main then keep it and use it until it pukes (tears) by that time you should have saved enough money to order a new canopy. HISPA 21 www.panamafreefall.com

I am no canopy expert, only a kid with very low jumps. if you can master the brake turns, flare turns and all the things your canopy can do, then go for it. I am the same like you, and most prolly will do the same. Again I say (there are a lot of flamers here) take all I have said with a grain of salt, what I said is what I will do in a very far future. am no expert but I think that that canopy is to small for him. Tell him what billvon said about the skills, and then brainwash him with "it only takes 1 jump to get yourself killed or hurt". It only took one jump to a friend of mine to break his coxys, one jump for another friend to break his leg, it only took me one jump to hurt my wrist and it only took one jump to kill a lot of our skydiving community and most of them were flying a perfectly good canopy. another thing, he wont enjoy the ride he will go like this: Open canopy, release toggles, scream "Oh Sh¡t, Oh Sh¡t to fast to fast... time to land" whack!
