Who said that you can't jump year round in Colorado
teamhypoxia replied to dmbale's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
No NO NO!! Colorado sucks! the weather is terrible! the people are rude! it smells bad! now go back to California, take a Texan with you, and tell all your friends how awful Colorado is! -
Speaking of free things on the side of the road... This is the funniest thing I've ever seen on this site.

Admittedly, I don't have a myriad of cameras or flash cards to test, but I do know from what I have that in a Canon 10d, I can put in a Lexar PRO 256mb 40X (was high dollar when I bought it) or a Lexar 256mb 4X (cheapo) cf card and get identical results in regards to shooting frames per second when shooting Jpg Large. If I set the camera to rapid fire the shutter, and hold the release down, I get 9 shots quickly (three seconds?) followed by a shot ~every second. I just tried this shooting RAW as well and if it's any slower, it's barely noticeable. If these speed differences are only reflected in the write/read speeds when transferring images to a computer, then I personally have a hard time justifying the extra $ for the "faster" cards. I have never seen any shooting speed difference in any of the cards I've put into my 10D. Bottom line for me... if a faster card would give me more frames per second when shooting, then I might shell out a few more dollars. If the difference is so nominal that I can't notice it, or if it only shows up in transferring the images, then I will buy the cheapest card I can find in the size I want

See this is what I'm talking about! She lies! As proof, I'm attaching a picture of me astride a rather large motorcycle, next to a towering oak. She's evil I tell you

Wow you guys. This is a tad over the top.*** Yeah you guys, enough with the "praise Mary" crap some of us have to live in the same state with her and if her head swells too big, it'll block out the sun. besides, I could tell you all sorts of nasty little secrets about her that would curl your toes. she's actually quite evil

I know a couple of "Bill"s with pro-ratings, but I'm not sure wether or not the requirements are any different for them. If you plan to have your Bill do a level 1 demo though, you will need to have him pro-rated.

I jump the Sigma 14mm aspherical on my 10D (see attatched pic). It has a larger hood and I have never had any problems. I haven't actually tried jumping it with the barrel... never saw a reason to. Out of curiosity, I just tried it right now, and I get just the tiniest (barely noticeable) bit of dark corners so it might be feasible to attatch a filter and tape the barrel to the lens.

Things I've learned skydiving that have nothing to do with parachuting
teamhypoxia replied to jahk's topic in The Bonfire
My teammate, who is a plumber, imparted this bit of wisdom on a ride to altitude: He said "In all my years of plumbing, I've learned one thing" "Oh yeah", I said, "what's that?" "People don't chew their corn" -
Competition CRW 4-way Rotation and Sequential video wanted
teamhypoxia replied to quade's topic in Canopy Relative Work
I have LOTS of 4-way rotation. I flew camera for the Wild Humans for last few years. I even have some interesting wrap footage although I'm not sure there's a standard for how canopy formations "ought" to be shot when they turn around and try to involve the camera man. I did feel like shooting them for a while there PM me for xfer logistics -

If it didn't suck so bad to lose such an expensive piece of equipment, it sounds like great fun to intentionally destroy such an expensive piece of equipment I think I'd have gotten a little bit more creative though... roof testing, slow pitch camera ball, something along those lines. As far as insurance fraud goes... the biggest frauds in the insurance biz are the insurance companies themselves. Screw 'em I say

I'll second that opinion, just two weekends ago I had a terminal reserve opening and my stroboframe held up just fine. That's with a 10d and a 14mm Sigma lens (not a light package). I've had several lighting openings wearing my camera that made my terminal reserve opening look like a 1000' snivel. Again, no problems with the stroboframe.

guy that works next to me wanted to burn a cd and apparently had never done it before. So I explain it step by step without looking over at him cuz I'm working on my own stuff. at the end of it all, it doesn't work. only thing I can figure from his explanations, is that he's got a bad cd. so I grab another, walk over there and he hands me the one he was trying to burn. it's the freakin' clear plastic disc that they put on the top of the stack of blank disks when you buy them!!! so I took it home and put a nice pretty label on it for him... something about how everything he knows about computers is contained on this disc. it's currently hanging by his desk and he proudly shows it to everyone who comes in

Camcorder format? does it matter any more?

in addition... if you're going to be doing any video work at a world meet, at least at the present time, PAL is required -
Looking for Tandem Photo to use in Skydive Moab's Brochure
teamhypoxia replied to clint's topic in Photography and Video
I shoot tandem video in Colorado. I have a 10D (high res digital) I may be able to scoot down there one of these weekends. Let me know if you're interested. -
It depends on what type of filming you intend. If you are going for "artsy" video and/or stills, I would recommend an elliptical sized to give you lots of range in both speed and lift. If you're after competition video (from behind, with a consistent field of view), you'll probably want a lightning loaded as heavily as you can safely land, and you'll have to experiment with front risers and cross control.

An attack that could rival or exceed 9/11

My bridle is short enough that about half of my pilot chute gets sucked into the middle ring. It's always there after landing and walking back, so I doubt it'd ever come out from a rough dock or hard point
-
Yes, a big reason we've used a floating handle was that you are pulling the pilot chute out from the apex rather than the top, allowing it to catch air instantly. Obviously, you don't want the handle fixed at the apex because the proper bridle setup will retract your pilot chute through the center ring a bit. If you're using a regular hackey pilot chute, you will need to adjust the pin stop accordingly as the "lenghth" of the pilot chute itself now needs to be factored into the pull. If you don't account for this, there's a good chance that a full arm extension will not be enough to pull the pin.
-
Letting go of the pilot chute before pulling the pin... assuming you use a straight pin, this will obviously result in another pilot chute in tow which you'll have to pull from the bridle
