Using 2 go-pros for video/stills and charging tandems $120
Jacked replied to Mr_Polite's topic in Photography and Video
I too have been saved by flying backup, Video from a bottom mounted GoPro shooting 120 fps. With the FOV on medium it is very close to matching my .55 on the cx150 using active stabilization.. Makes for great slow motion exits... As a still its only as good as what its looking through (plastic vrs glass) , There is personal motivation in packing real glass and some of the shots I have printed and framed separate my desire from others... Thats all it really boils down to.. I wonder if Mike Mcgowan (spelling?) would have settled for a GoPro? For me its not about the Tandem at all, it's about how I tell the story... My gear is what I choose, no one else decides that. I had to prove the GoPro hero2 shot video as well as the cx150... I dropped the freefall footage on twelve videos and replaced to with GoPro footage and the only thing noticed by those watching was the smoother slo motion exits... Change is good and I'm seriously looking at the NEX for stills.. I don't see a real quality issue here if everything is set up right... My rig is below The end result is directly connected to the effort applied -

My next setup will be the nex 5 with a pancake 16mm and a GoPro 2 at 120 FPS on a medium FOV setting, All that will most likely ride on one of the new toneflys... I agree with most of your statement except maybe for the nonsense part. We do different things for different reasons, I personally don't do video for the money that's offered as much as I use the opportunity the video camera presents me with and that's putting me in a position to take the still shot. The money is good and it helps offset the cost... Others have different motives and drives... I don't consider any ones aspirations nonsense, I'm sure you didn't mean it that way anyhow, check this out not to long ago I was told by a member of our management team that Gopros and our DZ will not fly. (yet they still talk about handy cam) I have a west pro system with a hero 2 mounted underneath the platform that runs in medium FOV at 120 FPS, The video reselution in that mode is no less than a DVD so there is no loss of anything rendering to that medium... What I've done for the past fifteen maybe twenty tandem videos that I edit at home for mail out is replaced the freefall footage from the cx150 with the Gopro footage.. I up load these videos to my YouTube channel so the costumer can view and share while their DVD package is in transit...I told no one, The only comments I've had from our staff is how smooth the slow motion seems to be.. Now I've let everyone in on my little secrete, It seems to be a past issue now.. Next the only (major) issue we have to solve next is stills... The mini series of mirrorless cameras with exchangeable lens will answer that I believe... Any camera I don't care if it shoots 50 megapixel shots, is only as good as the glass it sees through. (or plastic). We seem to be on the same page but for different reasons The end result is directly connected to the effort applied -

Since my DZ has more invested in the coke machine out front than any camera gear that frames any tandem leaving their aircraft that statement should be directed at the videographer :0 [/:/] The investment DZ's are considering is more likely the handy-cam worn by the tandem instructor. They require no slot and never bitch about to much or to little work... Still no more of an investment on a DZO than the coke machine [/crazy] The end result is directly connected to the effort applied -
When I said "Skill level" I was just referring to the settings on your camera and the matching of your environment. You know, photography The end result is directly connected to the effort applied

i would like to revise the above as far as the still photography is concerned, The mini platform (NEX7 or the Canon) with interchangeable lens is the better choice... The GoPro is holding its own in the Video department, Lacks in still quality compared. The end result is directly connected to the effort applied -
There are many variables to this question, What are you trying to do? Just get by, or leave an impression? The gorpo is great handling video and for a spray and pray approach to photos will handle the job of any tandem mill.. The still photo, in my world, is what the video puts me into a position to take.. No matter how big the chip or how many megapixels the camera shoots with, They all have one big disadvantage, they only take a photo as good as the glass they look through... The gopro is a fine video platform and will get you by selling handycam packages with stills included...That is if thats all you're wanting to do. Your skill level will do exactly that level off someplace midstream... Look into the mini camera systems with interchangeable lens if your concerned with weight or a rebel series with some good glass (if your not worried about weight) and explore the magic of aerial photography... I like a hero 2 on a medium field of view (matches a .5 on a cx150 pretty damn close) set at 120 fps for freefall footage, That leaves more room for the still platform, a T3i with a 10-22 canon lens or something in the mini's line like previously mentioned... You can burst an exit with the format on Jepg and not raw. Being conscience of your shots and only taking the exit and deployment in sequence you wont fill the buffer enough to loose any shots (using a high speed card) I shoot in manual mode with manual focus so it can fire at will with great results... I'm using a canon 10x22 at a focal length of 16 for the average tandem.... You will love it The end result is directly connected to the effort applied

Gopro, hero 2... 11 MP still, also 3 field of view settings for 1080 p format. Medium setting about matches my .5 on the cx. Stills every second needs to be addressed, you miss so much in a second. I'm looking at a blow switch mod for one now... I fly a cx150 with a t2i hosting the cannon 10-22mm and a hero-2 as well, I like the wider door shots and a different perspective, the added bonus of a backup video is not bad even though it's not intended for that it has saved my ass once already... I think the future is going to be small format, our job is to keep the quality up as we advance to a lighter, safer, platform... Dont accept it until your issues are satisfied. Don't shut it down without checking out the end product either, you selling a fellow video guy short and that's not how we advance... I have seen 2,000 dollar head gear produce total crap and I've seen some really cool video shot with go pro's... Case in point, Skydive Dubai's official video with the super slow motion is something you should look up on youtube and watch in awe... Go pro 2's shooting 60 fps, As far as spending money goes my respect goes to the poor video guy that has all the old hand me downs and pulls off the best shots and edits of the day, (edited by the videographer not some cookie cutting college kid that never gets to altitude).. The link below will show you what I fly so take a look before you go blasting my liking of the idea of lighting the load with a skill/quality ratio that has no monetary value.... and a couple gopro's Wow I don't believe I just posted.... Must have hit a nerve... The end result is directly connected to the effort applied -
I just bought the century .55x lens for my sony cx110 and the camera is out of focus at the infinity setting.. Is that due to the step down ring? The end result is directly connected to the effort applied

***I don't think there's a rule, but it generally works out that way, unless there's a second pass with tandems on the first pass. He says in that situation, he/they don't swoop. /*** What about the videographers? They typically have smaller canopy's.. Some even swoop... Some just get down quick for the landing shot... Hence cameras focus on one thing... Not traffic either... The end result is directly connected to the effort applied

***The key to successful camera flying is not to lock yourself into one particular setup but to develop an understanding of each of the factors that come into play to generate an image and take the tools that are needed for the job at hand... /*** That is a very good piece of advice... I bought the camera body and the 10 x 22 at the same time. I'm currently looking to expand my "tool box". I have every lens under the sun for a sony. They are all film lens though. I have been coaxing that old camera every skydive for good shots.. I'm tired of using my hand to clear era codes by cycling the on and off switch during free-fall.. It's days are done... I think I'm going to go with the small EF-S 17-85mm That should cover everything.. Thank you all for your input... *** I shoot with a Century 0.55x and the 10-22 set around 17mm and the Still is generally just a bit wider. /*** That would be my lens of choice if I could find one for the cx110... I found one cheap one that was not HD... The end result is directly connected to the effort applied

I shot a Minolta 18 to 28 wide angle on a Sony A100 for the better part of a year, I'm not sure what the actual crop factor is being that lens was for a 35mm... I shot it at close to 28, I was using a .5 on the cx110. The setup was good for RW.. The canon lens is real wide compared to what I was use to. Flying at the edge of the burble was OK with the Sony setup but I would have to drop to close using my new rig... I am thankful for the 18 mp... I need to find a combination like I had with the Sony... The end result is directly connected to the effort applied

I'm shooting a canon t2i with a cx110 on tandems, .45 on video and a 10 x 22 canon set on 22... I'm going to get a lens for RW and am just wondering what would be recommended? The end result is directly connected to the effort applied

I just got one from Gopro, I installed it on a fully charged camera Thursday night and stuck it away in my camera bag. This weekend at the DZ I broke it out and the camera will not turn on.. I took the back off and still the camera wont operate.. I wont even acknowledge the USB in charge mode with the led light... I'm waiting for a reply from Gopro as to what to do next... It's not my primary camera but is nice for inside work fun jumping I hope they will fix it for me without to much hassle... I did update my firmware about 3 months ago... Should I do this with the viewer on the camera??? The end result is directly connected to the effort applied

I just got the new LCD viewer for my Gopro and after installing it the camera newer turned on again.. It wont even take a charge, no lights, no nothing... I'm hoping Gopro will get back with me with an easy fix... I'm wondering it anyone has run across or heard of this happening to anyone else? The end result is directly connected to the effort applied

Come to my DZ and tell as licenced skydiver (26 jumps) not to wear booties.. Students at our DZ do not make decisions on anything inside of the flight parameters. Jump suits are required and none of our student jumpsuits have booties.. I have worked with a couple students that have bought their own jump suits with booties.. I allowed them to jump with them because I was teaching them to fly anyway and in another 5 or 6 jumps they would be licenced and jumping what they want anyway, Best get them on track as quick as possible.. If the student had issues in the air I would not let them fly booties until we worked the issues out.. That is your call as an instructor (Coach cat's) I have had no issues at all with a good booty assisted track from any new skydiver leaving a pack of fun jumpers gaining separation for clean air deployment.. AFF is a completly diffrent story. (IMHO) The end result is directly connected to the effort applied

A couch does not give a pull sign, The only way we can tell a student to deploy is to turn and track followed by deployment of our canopy, I didn't see any practice touches on top, this is something any good instructor couch or AFF would want to see first off on a recurrence.. IMHO this was a very bad example of an instructional rating period.. The end result is directly connected to the effort applied

You can do practice grips on your hacky with gloves on but beware under canopy, getting your gloved hands into some steering toggles might prove more difficult that you might expect, a slack grip is dangerous close to the ground. Also if jumping with a Z1 or any full faced helmet be sure you can open the visor with gloved hands. fogging is not desirable in the bottom half of your landing approach.. All of the above I have witnessed first hand.. Lastly, snot sickles should not be plucked from you nose, they should melt naturally... The end result is directly connected to the effort applied
