"Physics of Skydiving" talk in Chicago, Thursday.
craichead replied to kallend's topic in Events & Places to Jump
Psst, Professor... A location, specifically an address, would help. Is it at 3101 S Dearborn? AndyMan and I would go, but we have to be at work. _Pm __ "Scared of love, love and aeroplanes...falling out, I said takes no brains." -- Andy Partridge (XTC) -
It's a den that we could convert into a bedroom, but we made it into the dining room, instead.

Actually...I read somewhere that the arches were supposed to be exactly that. They were easily seen from the road, and they were supposed to remind people of their mothers' warm and loving bosoms. McDonald's = family and good food. Kind of a stretch if ya ask me, though. http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/specials/1616_fastfood/page6.shtml _Pm Edited to add link!

Ha! Hmm...yeah, advertising/marketing faux pas. If you're going to do an urban-themed ad campaign, you better be checking the Urban Dictionary regularly. _Pm __ "Scared of love, love and aeroplanes...falling out, I said takes no brains." -- Andy Partridge (XTC)

What would you think of a man who breastfeeds his baby?
craichead replied to lawrocket's topic in The Bonfire
I saw that show, too...but I thought that he learned how to lactate, but he never actually breastfed his baby. I was under the impression that he just wanted to see if he could actually learn to lactate. _Pm __ "Scared of love, love and aeroplanes...falling out, I said takes no brains." -- Andy Partridge (XTC) -
I had arthroscopic surgery 3 months ago for a torn labrum. The doctor had told me that if my shoulder were a clock face, the tear extended from 10 o'clock to 6 o'clock. You can see cool pictures of the inside of my shoulder here: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1312653#1312653 I am just now getting into intermediate strengthening exercises with weights and bands in my physical therapy sessions, and I'll probably be in supervised PT for another 6-8 weeks. Shoulder surgery recovery is a long and drawn out process, and you HAVE to keep up with your exercises, even when you're done with supervised therapy. My shoulder joint has never felt this tight and stable in my life. As I've said in other posts about shoulder dislocations, my joints are naturally loose, so I'm prone to these types of injuries. _Pm __ "Scared of love, love and aeroplanes...falling out, I said takes no brains." -- Andy Partridge (XTC)

No, I don't think it was a summer school class. However, it sounds like he's in an honors "track," and he probably could've opted out of the honors track if he didn't want to do the extra work that the school/teacher assigned for the advanced students. Disclaimer: I went to a private, college-prep school, so that may invalidate my 2 cents since this occured in a public school. I was in honors/AP classes 6-12, and sometimes we did get small assignments before the start of the school year for "refreshing" purposes. It wasn't "punishment." It's what we had to do if we wanted to stay in the honors track and keep up with the curriculum. My school also required summer reading for the entire school (grades 5-12). There was a list of about 10-20 books for each grade level, and each student had to choose and read 3, then write a report or take a test on the books at the start of the year. Then in high school, we also had to complete 120 hours of community service. I always thought this was a good thing. Builds character and all that. What's so wrong about expecting higher standards from an honors student? In a time where a lot of public schools are struggling to meet average, I'm glad to see a school that has higher standards for their students to meet. I'm curious to know if 1) the requirements of the honors class were clearly stated when he signed up for it and 2) how much homework he was actually given. On a side note -- Seriously, what does this lawsuit and whining say about this kid's character (or lack thereof)? When he gets to the real world and has a real job, is he going to bitch and complain when he has to take work home after the 9-5 office hours? Does he think an employer would actually hire someone with an attitude like that? _Pm __ "Scared of love, love and aeroplanes...falling out, I said takes no brains." -- Andy Partridge (XTC)

Well, he was also in the honors pre-cal class, which he could have more than likely opted NOT to take if he didn't want to do the extra work. If you're in an honors class, you should expect to be doing work above and beyond of what's required. I'm sure this lawsuit will look really good on his college applications. _Pm __ "Scared of love, love and aeroplanes...falling out, I said takes no brains." -- Andy Partridge (XTC)

Another reason to make fun of Canadians...and my Canadian husband told me to post this! _Pm http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=841&e=5&u=/nm/20050121/wl_canada_nm/canada_crime_sextoys_col Canadian Police Search for Sex Toy Thief January 21, 2005 Canada - Reuters VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Reuters) - Police were on the search on Friday for a thief who made off with three "male appendages" from a Vancouver-area sex-toy store and may now be looking for batteries. A clerk discovered the man stuffing the fake body parts into his clothes and asked "if he was going to need batteries for these three objects," the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said in a news release. "The male calmly stated 'no', and then panicked and fled, running out of the store with the three objects, minus batteries," the police statement said. __ "Scared of love, love and aeroplanes...falling out, I said takes no brains." -- Andy Partridge (XTC)

Wow, I had no idea Harry lived around here...cool! So my family is in quarantine for Whooping Cough...
craichead replied to ACMESkydiver's topic in The Bonfire
Wow, this topic makes me livid! I completely fail to understand why parents do not get their healthy children immunized. It is selfish and extremely idiotic to put their children's health and lives in danger of preventable and serious diseases because of some whacked out ideology or conspiracy theory. ACME has very good reasons for having to skip some immunizations for her kids, so I understand that. However, I've heard really lame excuses like: - Vaccinations cause X disease (ADD/ADHD, autism, MS, etc.) - I never got immunized, and I'm okay - Everybody else is immunized so it's fine (relying on herd immunity-so everyone else has to get immunized for your benefit?!) - It's just a huge money-making scheme of the pharmaceuticals - It's a ruse from doctors, the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics Arrrgh. I can't stand it. Yeah, my father (radiologist), sister (pediatrician) and brother-in-law (pediatric cardiologist), are all in cahoots with the CDC and the AAP to pull the wool over everybody's eyes. I'll be sure to put on my tinfoil hat on the next time I visit them. _Pm Edited to add: ACME, I'm glad all of your family is okay! -
I love Andy, and I've met the crazy jraf and the lovely misskriss! Oh yeah...and NASA is neat. I've been in shuttle and space station simulators at Space Camp. _Pm __ "Scared of love, love and aeroplanes...falling out, I said takes no brains." -- Andy Partridge (XTC)

Hey Eiley! How are ya? I don't think Bill Rancic is a licensed skydiver...it seems that he's done a few tandems. He did a tandem at Skydive Chicago this past summer with the Golden Knights. Here's their weekly newletter with pictures of him with Missy and Rook: http://www.skydivechicago.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=860 On the subject of adventurous and extreme sport business moguls...have you heard about or seen the Richard Branson version of The Apprentice? It's a Fox show called The Rebel Billionaire. Very entertaining.

I think this should be number 1, but we haven't reached that number in the list, yet. 3. They occasionally show an interest piece on how different types of weather phenomena affect skydiving, and it's at my home dropzone (Chicagoland Skydiving Center)! Just wanted to post this photo of Branson in skydiving gear, as seen on the Fox.com web site for the Rebel Billionaire...of course, the photo doesn't really mean anything because all pictures lie! _Pm __ "Scared of love, love and aeroplanes...falling out, I said takes no brains." -- Andy Partridge (XTC)
