Do You Want A Predictable Landing Pattern ?
burtonjm replied to danornan's topic in Safety and Training
I chose that as one of my options because that is what determines landing direction at my DZ. You either land "hangars on the left" or "hangars on the right" depending on what the winds are doing at takeoff. Everyone on the load follows the determined pattern regardless of what the winds do while we are in the air. One of my last jumps there the entire load landed downwind because the winds did a 180. Nobody complained and it's a good skill to have. This shit, right here, is OK -
We had a jumper have a 2 out this summer because her RSL somehow managed to pull the reserve pin when she deployed her main. I don't know the specifics of how it happened but she landed the bi-plane with minimal steering on rears This shit, right here, is OK

I've had my car up to 135, but I don't do that anymore. Not worth dying/getting my license taken away. However, when I did do it, I knew that stretch of the highway, could see straight ahead for two miles, and there weren't any cars in front of me This shit, right here, is OK

Drinking lots of water/constantly peeing should help. Also try going to the bathroom and splashing cold water on your face...That usually works for a little bit This shit, right here, is OK

I landed off at right around 50 jumps. Blame it on poor spotting. The four of us doing RW realized at about 5k where we were and broke off early. I realized immediately on opening we weren't gonna make it back and followed the most experienced guy there to the best out we had: a small cornfield next to a community pool. It was like my 3rd jump on the canopy, and when I turned to final (I turned a bit early) I knew i was headed for power lines so I did a flat turn 180 to down-wind it into the heart of the cornfield. Didn't have a pullup cord with me, but I was the only one with a phone so I called manifest to let them know where we were. We ended up getting a ride back with the local sheriff who saw us landing. Now I always keep a pullup cord in my rig and I would be much more confident landing off again now that I've done it once (beer was bought & enjoyed) This shit, right here, is OK

There is probably a good gym in your town if you are too weak to properly control your parachute. Student rigs don't have any loops so it's just hold on and pull up and hold. Easy to do but to hold for 5/10 min wooh what a work out. My rig doesn't have loops on the rear risers... come to think of it, none of the ones Ive jumped have had them either. Now, loops on the front risers... got those! I've never seen or heard of a rig that had loops on the rear risers...but what do I know This shit, right here, is OK

Does the fear ever go away?
burtonjm replied to Hunt_Joshua_G's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I asked this question to one of my instructors on my 2nd jump. Her response was "The day you are no longer afraid to jump out of an airplane is the day you should quit skydiving." I still feel fear on the plane ride up but it's manageable and a lot of it is performance anxiety. The thing that helped me the most was closing my eyes on the ride up and visualizing every part of the skydive. This shit, right here, is OK -
Same. I'm always relieved every time I log on and see there are no new threads This shit, right here, is OK

:0:0 It's amazing what being back at college will do for that first number! Unfortunately it kills the jumping. Currently working on a plan to convince the local airport to let me jump out of their 172s This shit, right here, is OK
