There are several big differences between public education and a universal healthcare program. - Public education is provided to 1/3rd of the population in a given year, not the entire population. - Public education is fairly uniform in what is provided - 6 hours of classroom instruction - 180 days per year. Comparatively, it's a cookie cutter operation. - Total gov't funding of K-12 public education is approximately $500 billion per year. Total healthcare costs run 2-3 TRILLION DOLLARS per year. IOW it's a much bigger expenditure. Here's the kicker, we've had nationwide "free" education for about 90 years, yet we seem unable to get it right. There's always a push for more money and the quality of education seems to constantly be lacking. Anyone live in a school district that actually runs smoothly and doesn't constantly have a bunch of infighting? Do you realy want to turn over your healthcare to someone who has consistently shown an inability to manage programs that involve a large portion of the population? Programs far simpler than universal healthcare? I'd rather turn it over to people who only care about my health when I dont have any prblems...since that's the only way they make money. I'd like to have corporations carrying about my health. They have proven to be so caring. Did you know that once you have a heart attack you can no longer have insurance. So what do you do then? 7 ounce wonders, music and dogs that are not into beer

I am not going to discuss the Iraq war in this thread. normally i would agree and say lets not mix the two subjects. but kallend has a point. why are we so ready to spend money on war, but so hesitant to help our own people. 7 ounce wonders, music and dogs that are not into beer

Free schools? How about property taxes, county taxes, and city tax? How is that free? Gas tax, vehicle registration, and once again city tax! Not free! My parents were paying for it through there taxes. And now I am paying for it through my taxes although I do not have any kids. I might someday when I can afford it. I love how your mindset is that it is free. The Govt is paying for it so it is free. Keep it up. I got an idea, how about we go and pay for your car insurance while we are at it. Hell lets send you a check for food. You can't live without food. What else do you want to milk from the taxpayer? i dont thiank anything is free.....maybe you missed the part where i wrote "paid by taxpayers." Everyone shuold have access to healthcare the same way they have access to schooling....that's my only point. Everyone shares these costs in the form of taxes. why should healthcare be any different from education? You got to go to school on everyone elses money. Were you complaining then? I didnt think so. 7 ounce wonders, music and dogs that are not into beer

"Free" public schools? What universe did YOU grow up in? I did say paid by taxpayers : "free schooling when you were getting to educate yourselves paid by taxpayer money" 7 ounce wonders, music and dogs that are not into beer

I bet all you guys/gals speaking out so loudly against "socialized healthcare" went to free public schools, and got their via free roads, on a school bus you didnt have to pay for every morning. hmmm....Were you also speaking out so loudly against free schooling when you were getting to educate yourselves paid by taxpayer money? 7 ounce wonders, music and dogs that are not into beer

So, the problem is socialism. And we should fight a problem of socialism with more socialism? Why should I take care of anyone else? Why should anyone out there take care of my kids? My kids are MY kids, not the children of a "village." We shuold probably get away from free public schools. They are very much representative of socialism. How about free public raods? We should have tollways on all roads. Maybe we should charge for air too...for those who can afford to breathe, 7 ounce wonders, music and dogs that are not into beer

http://www.reuters.com/article/environmentNews/idUSSYD29548220071009?pageNumber=2 "Tim Flannery, a world recognized climate change scientist and Australian of the Year in 2007, said a U.N. international climate change report due in November will show that greenhouse gases have already reached a dangerous level. Flannery said the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report will show that greenhouse gas in the atmosphere in mid-2005 had reached about 455 parts per million of carbon dioxide equivalent -- a level not expected for another 10 years." "Flannery, from Macquarie University and author of the climate change book "The Weather Makers", said he had seen the raw data which will be in the IPCC Synthesis Report." "He said the measurement of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere included not just carbon dioxide, but also nitrous oxide, methane and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). All these gases were measured and then equated into potentially one gas to reach a general level." "That 200 gigatonnes of carbon pollutant, the standing stock that's in the atmosphere, is there courtesy of the industrial revolution, and we're the beneficiaries of that and most of the world missed out," he said. 7 ounce wonders, music and dogs that are not into beer

Snopes Generally speaking, if you see anything in a re-forwarded email it's pretty freekin' easy to assume it's BS and pretty easy to prove it's BS just by checking it out on Snopes or by doing an exact search on Google of a few words from the body of the text. Please, whenever you get an email forwarded email like that, check it out, prove it's stupid and reply to your "friend". Try to make him look like a moron, uh, silly as much as possible so that maybe, just maybe, this non-sense will stop. roger that....i dont know why i didnt think of that 7 ounce wonders, music and dogs that are not into beer

Healthcare is not, and can never be, free. i dont mind being taxed for it. Edited: In the US I pay approximatly 23% taxes off my paychecks. In Canada I paid about 25% (but was never billed for healthcare) It sure must suck to live here as a slave. Ever think about escaping? That's pansy ass reply. I love Texas!!! Sure there are some things I dont like about it...but I have now lived in 5 countries...and in each one there is something I loved about it, and something I disliked. 7 ounce wonders, music and dogs that are not into beer

Because of the sinking dollar, my money that was sent to me in Canadian funds, ended up being more in US funds then I ever expected. Thank you current administration for the extra money in my pocket! 7 ounce wonders, music and dogs that are not into beer

That's not always an option. My kid was an accident....wonderful accident, but nevertheless having a kid was the last thing I was planning on doing. 7 ounce wonders, music and dogs that are not into beer

That leaves $4,500/month. Maybe some people ought to sell some of their jet-skis and $40,000 macho big-dick pickup trucks if they can't live on that kind of money. $4500 for 4 people is not that much. My kid's day care costs $800/mnth.I dont have another option. Then there is a house payment. There is your regular old bills. It's nice to go to a restaurant here and there. It adds up quick. When I had private insurance that I had to purchase myself because I was in business for myself....my out of pocket costs were $3K, I happened to get in a nasty car accident, and there goes $3K. I dont gree with Bush's decision. 7 ounce wonders, music and dogs that are not into beer

Obesity may push U.S. health costs above Europe: study
pop replied to masterblaster72's topic in Speakers Corner
Not meant to be a fat-people-bashing thread, but when an individual's problem becomes someone else's, something needs to be done to address the problem. What solutions do you think would help to reduce obesity in the USA, without over-reaching government intervention? Parents need to take responsibility and taech kids about the effets of fast food. Kids need to be taught to excersize from an early age. Did I mention fast food makes people fat? 7 ounce wonders, music and dogs that are not into beer -

$83000 after taxes brings in approximatly $5K per month after taxes. That is not that much money for a family of four. Especially if you are attmep[ting to buy a house, keep sevearl cars, and feed and clothe all 4 people. Private insurance for four people can easily run $500 per month, not to mention the rediculous out of pocket costs associated with these private plans. 7 ounce wonders, music and dogs that are not into beer
