To build on my "no self-build" statement, last year, I built one for my parents and it has been nothing but headaches. I built the whole thing in about 5 hrs and then installed the OS and then it went to shit quick. I just dont know what to get and what works well together. I have put more hours into that thing than I care to admit and wish I would have just got them a Dell. Oh well, next time I'll know. ------------- I saw that system, and even had my fingers in it for a while (I am a professional geek). it did have some flakyness.. As for Dell, Just get an on-site warranty, otherwise, they suck. had a client buy one against my recommendations, and the NIC was DOA. they wanted us to send it back to them for 14 days so they could fix it. They refused to send the part. I ended up installing a new NIC as it would be cheaper (time is money). Let me know what you want and I can build one for ya...

My feedback on quick release plates
cameramonkey replied to airdrew20012001's topic in Photography and Video
Hey guys, I am just curious because I will probably end up getting quick release plates anyway. But isn't there at least some snag risk using these plates? Considering the handle, etc. ------------------ I agree. I took the QR plate off my still as it had some MAJOR snag points. -
Lummy, who do I look like, Clay??? ;) I am a professional geek(computer network engineer), and the lack of broadband would be a blow to my geekdom... hell, I was breaking out in cold sweats and considering breaking my lease several months ago. Seems the only broadband I can get here is a cable modem, and it was looking like I might lose it when Excite went under. DSL is not available in my neighborhood, and satellite has too much latency. Thought I was gonna have to move down the road to get my "real" internet back. Besides, my average daily posting is probably less than 3 a day. I do most of my posting at one of my jobs... 6 hours in the middle of the night with nothing to do but surf the 'net.
-
ooooh... soooo tempting to take my camera and head south... however two things would happen (not sure which would be first) GF kills me for moving so far away, or head explodes due to lack of broadband internet connection ;).

I think I heard from an instructor that there is a card you can get that is used specifically for that reason. --------------------- I have heard that generally the screeners say " wtf is this??? I honestly dont give a f... what this card says." (as they go about scrutinizing your gear even more)
-
Just beat the damn thing with sledge hammer. ---------------------- I agree... it IS on your property after all. In all seriousness, I would at least give the assh... er I mean neighbor the benefit of a "discussion" make sure the numb nuts is aware that its YOUR property, and that its disturbing your dog (and consequently, YOU). THEN send it home to him in dozens/hundreds/thousands of small peices. My preference is via trebuchet (HUGE mideival catapult device capable of hurling a piano sized object 200 yards) http:// http://www.middelaldercentret.dk/acta.html nothing quite like the sound of a piano impacting the earth at terminal ;)

The weather gods are teasing Indiana....

Here I sit... looking at my thermometer, that is currently reading a balmy 68 degrees. 30 some degrees higher than it was on monday, and a good 30 higher than it is supposed to be on sunday. Sounds great, till I hear the whistle of the 35mph gusts of wind. :( even when its "nice" it still isnt jumpable. *GRRRRR* -
its VERY hard to explain... have someone show you at your DZ... I had it explained and made NO sense (neither did PRO). being shown makes ALL the diff in the world.

Ritalin worked pretty good for me.... ----- got any extras I can bum??? ya see, this "freind" of mine needs it, but cant get a prescrip for it....he doesnt officially have it anymore. he had his doc confirm off the record its still "active" based on a diagnosis as a child (ritalin and everything), and the fact that he still has all of the symptoms. Problem is this "freind" also has a pilot's license... that diagnosis is a disqualifier for his FAA medical. Trouble is he just pissed away $5000 last year on techincal training because he couldnt study... chronically didnt have the drive or concentration needed. life sucks

"I'm Calling about your magazine subsciption.." --------------- I had a similar one happen, this one just pissed me off. I subscribe to Maxim. For those who dont know, its basically a cool, PG-13 men's mag with bikini photos of famous chicks, models, funny, but generally usefless stuff (think Cosmo for men) anyway, I renewed my subscription last year for 3 years. thru a company they outsource the subs thru. Now about every 6 months, I get a "renewal notice" but if I look carefully, its for a totally different mag that I dont even get... Last one was for Playboy. the little card to send in is formatted EXACTLY like my maxim subscription, except its for a different mag. wonder how many guys have just renewed without looking, then tried in vain to get the other sub cancelled. Sneaky bastards.

I've always been known as a monkey... anyone that has seen me at the DZ (or anywhere there are things to climb on) knows I am a natural... doing things like climbing the steel framework on the inside of the hangar door to hang nylon banners from the top of the hangar. Who needs a ladder....
-
you may be tightening the leg straps to tight. try keeping them snug, but not cranked down. so THATS why I cant arch! ;)

Thats cool. I am selling my first canopy since its been in the closet for the past 2 years. Gonna sell the PC with it, but not the risers. Even tho they are brand new, doubt anyone is gonna need type 8's. I think they'll go better with the container. Besides, I'll need all the good/new stuff I can to sell the container. Around my DZ, it got the nickname of "the rig of death" as its an old Racer SST. Luckilly its a second generation racer, so it isnt a "Struggle Struggle Thump". I know, I got my first reserve, and my first round jump on that badboy. But it got the name because its kinda worn, faded (DOM 1985), and the risers are exposed as they go over your shoulder. I lost count of how many people stopped me to tell me my gear wasnt packed right LOL. Anyway, its like alot of small jump planes... airworthy, just not pretty. Oh, and I checked out your web page Kelly, we need more "ugly" women at our DZ ;).
-
Am I correct in remembering that when piecing out gear (permanently separating it), the dbag goes with the container, not the canopy?
-
What about stipulation 2? I have heard the wings containers are almost as bad, if not as bad as Racers to pack... I tried one of those on, but as I was adjusting it was told its not gonna do me any better in that dept than the racer I currently own.
-
Ok, after listening to my riggers bitch and moan (and more importantly, charge me more) I am starting to look towards replacing my racer. I am looking for a decent rig with the following constraints: 1: comfy 2: rigger freindly 3: reasonably priced Any inputs?

That sucks dude... I feel your pain! I been doing the independent consultant thing for the past 18 months or so... as it didnt do as well as I need, and all my cash is now gone, I am now having to look HARD for a new job. As for monster, all I have gotten from them in the past 2 1/2 years are empty match searches (or completely irrelevant jobs), or other job sites harvesting my email address and using it to invite me to THIER useless (and sometimes overpriced) job sites. its gotta work for somebody I guess... otherwise they wouldnt be in business.

You just took a 2 hr tour, now what are you going to do?
cameramonkey replied to kevin922's topic in The Bonfire
its not really "free" from an economics class perspective... it at least costs his time and energy.... the biggest expendature is gonna be for him to be able to say no 6,432 times to buying a time share in that 2 hour tour. They fly you down there so you will buy a time share, condo, etc... and they use VERY heavy handed, high pressure sales techniques. they will tag team you, and do anything they can just short of chineese water torture to make you sign the dotted line. IF you are good at saying no repeatedly, its a decent deal. -

In am a Sales and Marketing Consultant in the Hotel Industry and my advice is stay away. No offense but if it was a wrong call why would they pay for you to go to Orlando. I do not understand. Uh, well if the Director of Sales and Marketing was from Texas that would be a different story. ------------- all they care is he is a living breathing person... sure, they lost the business from the intended victim...er.... um "customer", but now they have another that might take his place. Think of it this way... you have a widget to sell...you call a number. it isnt the person you are trying to reach. why not try to sell it to this person? the worst they can do is say no. Selling to an alternate person is just as good as selling to the original intended person. either way you still get your money. bottom line, is person A or person B... either one's money spends the same when its in your hands :) -
If Quincy does happen again, he'll be out there trying to get aircraft like the C130, Super Connie, B17, 727 and the blimp. He'll probably succeed 75% of the time. I admire him for the 75% of the time he succeeds - I don't condemn him for the 25% of the time he fails. ------------------------- I can appreciate failures too.... just not outright lies. but I think this is enough about this... no sense beating a dead horse... next topic....
-
Dont get me wrong,I'm not bashing Quincy the event... I am bashing Quincy the management company, Don Kirlin in particular. I enjoyed myself when I was there, but was disappointed (and angry at Amerijet) when the Jet didnt show. Several months later when the truth came out, I was downright furious (with Don's lies). If they had been honest and forthcoming that the jet wasnt gonna be there, I would have been disappointed, but would have returned. SInce he wasnt, I cant in good conscience trust his organization, because what else will they lie to me about... something important like safety?
-
beleive it or not, yes... its too small to use in-flight, but is handy for quick TSD calcs when you forgot your big E6, like solving the "are we there yet" question on a road trip.
-
Will it move? two words... Gaffers tape ;) works for me anyway...
-
But this is during flight, if I have a mall I cutaway my main (off course) and if nescesarry the helmet. Personally I think a camera helmet should always be able to cutaway, this is also why I don't like the bonehead flat-top, has anyone a solution for this? ----- I'm working on a cutaway for mine... still engineering it in my head tho'. its basically a two pin reserve type system that pops the bolts loose on one chinstrap and the ratchet bolt on the back. in theory, it will just fall off your head at that point since the side is now swinging freely. I think the hardest part will be installing it. This is something that will have to be installed and be time consuming. IF it even works. I think the hardest part will be finding the proper balance between enough tension on the pins to keep things properly tensioned, without making it so tight that you cant pull them.

. I don't see how anybody could be comfortable wearing it for more than a few minutes. -------------------------- I have had mine for years.... and only take it off to jump. Almost never take it off... before skydiving I used to wear it for months at a time... taking it off only to scrub the soap scum out from the underside ;). Anyone remember the predecessor to this... the X Shock? Those were even better, and if you could break it other than by impacting the crystal, they would replace it for FREE!... they even suggested taping it to a parking lot and having semis driving over them. Was rated to 500M as I remember. Mine broke and sure enough, they shipped me a new one! Then it took a hit to the crystal, and I had to buy a new one... by then the x-es werent being made anymore. Have had this one ever since. Odd that this thread started... had to take my dress watch (analog chronograph) in for service... thats gonna cost me I think uugh.... I'd buy a new one, but the E6B bezel is one I havent found on any other dress watch.
