  1. You need to make sure you watch this instructional video first. As we all know skydiving is all about safety. Teach me to swoop
  2. Have fun with the trip, one more recommendation is the Black Rose. (Its by downtown somewhere, not really sure where I was drunk on new years when we went there) Good bar, GREAT food. It has a bar upstairs and a bar/restaurant downstairs. The absolute best Lobster Bisque I have ever eaten.
  3. Ive yet to jump out at perris yet since moving out to cali 2 weeks ago so I cant really say how they are during the week BUT I went to elsinore on a tuesday (first day I was in cali) and it was pretty dead (I thinkg they sent up 3 or 4 loads because of tandems and a small handfull of fun jumpers and then stopped for the day around 1:30). I was talking to on of the guys who worked there and they all headed over to perris and said that there is generall more of a crowd there during the week than elsinore.
  4. I had the same problem, in fact a group I was jumping with once nick named me "The Rock". [sarcasm]Those people telling you to get a suit and "learn to fly your body" are wrong. The correct approach is to jump with more experienced people and make them wear weights[/sarcasm] In all seriousness the advice here is great, get a good slow suit and some tunnel time can do wonders for learning to control your fall rate.
  5. Well if brantley and his center could figure out how to get a descent snap and if they could play consistently Then they might have had a shot this year but sadly no.
  6. unfortunately 0 Really trying to save some money so I can guy a rig and not have to rent gear anymore...
  7. Welcome! The best advice I can give you is start saving or start selling everything you own Seriously though it gets expensive. Other than that just have fun and be safe!
  8. It really all depends on your situation. I did 3 a day during AFF due to weather and number of loads going up. 3 a day during AFF worked pretty well for me, I had enough time between levels to reflect on how the jumps went, get a full debrief, and read and do plenty of dirt dives for my upcoming jump. Make sure you know what your TLO's are for your next jump. I saw a guy a few weeks ago do level one and forgot that he had to do 3 practice pulls. He did one and then just enjoyed the rest of the jump. When he got to the ground his instructors told him he didnt meet the requirements for level 1 and had to redo it. Not sure where you plan to do AFF at but hopefully they have a similar policy to Deland which is where I did mine. At deland when you finish AFF you get the gear for the rest of the day for free. So I planned mine so that my last AFF level was early in the morning and then I had a free (already paid for with AFF lvl 7) rig for the rest of the day. Good luck on your AFF.
  9. I didnt even know you guys were gonna be doing that, let me know if you try for a second shot
  10. yeah the first place I looked at I was a little dissapointed with, it was "right on the beach" which I did not know meant that there would be no waves due to the channel islands....
  11. thats not a bad idea, i live literelly right next to channel island harbor, my condo is actually off of harbor blvd
  12. yeah I play pool, but unfortunately I travel pretty frequently for work, lots of time with little to no warning so trying to get into a league is somewhat difficult.
  13. yeah ive thought about santa barbara but like I said, broke & trying to save for a rig so im *trying* to keep my skydiving and rental fees at a minimum right now
  14. Well the dz is definitely a place to start but Perris and Elsinore are both about 2 hours (or 8 depending on traffic, don't ever try to drive through la at 2 on a Friday thinking you will beat the traffic because sadly you won't) away plus my recent cross country voyage has left me pretty broke and I'm trying to save so I can buy a rig
  15. Ive never really been one for the whole bar scene which is what I know a lot of people do to meet new people after moving. I recently moved out to Ventura, CA and know pretty much know no one. Anyone have some ideas for a good way to meet people out here?
  16. I never planned on using a credit card to purchase a rig for two reasons. One I don't own a credit card nor do I want one, and two I would end up paying way more than I should because of high credit card interest rates. I was thinking of taking out a small loan (2-3k) to go towards my rig (after my recent cross country move I only have about 2k left in the bank). My biggest problem currently is finding a good used rig that is the size I want. I've been jumping a 240 and don't want to downsize too much, possibly 230 but no smaller than a 210 for the time being. As far as what I have looked at most rigs I've seen are 190 or smaller
  17. Very true.....not sure if it was just me but my advice, steer clear of the teriyaki chicken, I left at about 2:30 today because I felt like complete shit after eating it
  18. Not only that but don't stop trying certain things such canopy control and landing accuracy after you knocked those blocks out on your a license proficiency card. I completed all of my accuracy requirements for my b license before I got my a and still try and get as close to my target as I can on every jump I do. Keeping good records is vital for getting that done and make sure you put distance from target for your landings.
  19. Im sure there have been multiple threads on this before but the most recent thing I could find was 3 years ago and lets be honest, things change. Has anyone ever financed their first rig? I am depserately in need of a rig and it is getting expensive to keep renting something. However I dont have the multiple thousands of dollars required to buy one. Does anyone know anywhere that would offer financing for skydiving gear?
  20. Dont knock RW till you try it. Granted I havent been around this game long but when I first started AFF I had no interest in RW at all. Then I made one RW jump after completing my AFF and im hooked on it. It can be a ton of fun and very rewarding but you have to give it a try first. Now it still may not be for you but thats ok. Just starting out I would at least do some to learn how to fall relative to other people.
  21. I just finished my AFF and A license at deland. You are able to jump there solo after AFF but it would be much better to get hooked up with some people (whether it be coaches or just other fun jumpers with more experience than you). Certain things you cannot do alone, i.e. maintain fall rates. In addition to that one of the requirements for you A is to participate in at least 5 group skydives consisting of at least 2 or more people. The general rule at deland is that doing group skydives you should have at least 100 jumps between the two people, so you being just off aff should try to find someone closer to 100 jumps themself, if not more than that.
  22. Wish I could make it tomorrow but I will be there bright and early saturday morning!
  23. I actually completely forgot about that, gotta get myself a new copy now
  24. It wasn't near as bad as I thought it would be, left Elsinore around 430 knowing I was probably about to hate life but everyone stopped jumping around 2 and I didn't feel like sitting by myself forever at the dz. Ended up taking the 101 and only really had one spot where it was stop and go (can't remember exactly where)
