  1. It was a total malfunction of sorts. I believe the rigger that examined it said it was a pressure lock. With the ripcord pulled nothing came out. I was told later that if I had given the container a good whack with my elbow it possibly would have come out, but having not been trained to do this I went straight to emergency procedures. Perhaps you need to re-read my posts phillykev if you got the impression that i was "blaming the packer" as I really don't know what could have given you that idea. I even said that my inital reaction was being unsure as to whether they owed anything. If you got the wrong idea or thought I'm in the blaming people game then I'm sorry for not expressing myself clearly enough. JP
  2. You appear to have missed my point aggiedave. I, like you, would certainly not jump student packed gear...now. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. When instructors with several thousand jumps tell you "this is how it's done" I tend to listen. As I also stated, this was not something that happened recently. Jp
  3. "WHY would you jump a pack job that another student packed?" Well, I'm not sure what happens in the states but at my DZ in oz the last student to jump the student gear packs it under supervision...so when I turned up at the DZ I used this rig that had been packed the weekend before and not yet used. It was my 22nd jump and this is simply the way it is done and I had no reason to question it. I did however have my own set of gear within two weeks of this happening. I'm glad I had a mal so early in my skydiving carrier because it gave me confidence in my ability to handle a high speed/high stress situation. My question was not whether the rigger who packed the reserve should be bought alcohol (ofcourse he should be) but simply if two cases of beer should be supplied after a situation such as this...in my case the packer didn't and I'm not sure if I expected him to (he's a good friend of mine by the way) I just wanted to see what others thought. JP
  4. Having read the "beer buying protocol" from a previous thread I was still unable to find the answer to a question regarding a situation I was involved in. Last year, while still using student SOS gear, I had a high speed mal packed for me by another student (gotta love that reserve opening at terminal!). Suffice to say I very happily bought a case of European beer that night and spent the night enthusiastically telling anyone who asked about the jump. My question is, if another person/packer packs a mal, should they buy a case as well?
  5. "When there are cars backed up in a lane to take, say, the connecting ramp to another interstate, and there are two lanes to the left for those bypassing the turn, are you saying you will go in one of those lanes and then, at the last possible moment, try to squeeze into the lane with all the drivers who have been following the rules and waiting their turn?" Ummm, no, I don't believe I said that at all. In fact all I was really doing was responding to a post. Mellow the f@#f out dude.
  6. My my, this does seem to be sensitive topic...maybe driving etiquite is different in the states, but over here if there is a free lane then I see no reason to not make good use of said lane. I guess the same applies to the car pool lane; i must also confess to being guilty of that when I'm in a hurry. I'm not advocating dangerous driving, merely highlighting an technique that may can in handy for all involved...however, if I ever find myself in california of texas for some reason, I'm sure I'll be much better behaved.
  7. I must confess that if I see a chance to "cut" in and thereby decrease my travel time, I'll do it...every man/woman for them self in the traffic in my opinion. The trick is to stick the nose of your car into the space you want to get back into even if it doesn't look like the other commuter is willing to let you in. But then again, I'm a rude Australian.
  8. "Can't say much for the food in Egypt either." I'm with you on that on mate...somehow the middle eastern culinary delights didn't make it over the border. The only place I've been where I would rather eat American fast food than the local stuff.
  9. For the first time in a month I am going to overcome the obstacle that is a being a perpetually poor student doing end of semester exams and jump my arse off tomorrow...whooohooo!!! Might even be able to get my 100th in if I'm lucky and flirt with the manifest chick enough...god I f#%#ing love this sport! JP
  10. Had to bail out of a cessna 185 at 5K because the exhaust was leaking carbon monoxide...it was my first jump in my new jumpsuit with boosters so I thought, hey while i'm out i'll see what these things can do and started tracking. Looked at my alti as I passed through about 2250 and immediately went to dump, but my hand slipped off the handle because i did it too quick; I got the pilot-chute out on the second attempt and was swinging in the harness only just above 1000ft...thank god I got a fast opening. JP
  11. Blue skies...damn shame. Be careful out there people.
  12. Tragic as the death of Hansie Cronje may be, I can't help but wonder if the phrase "good sportsman" is bending the truth a just a little... JP
  13. While I feel a great deal of sympathy for the the family Vic Pappadoto, I can't help but feel that in this case the courts made a sensible decision. I am certainly not in favour of an increasingly litigious aspect of our sport developing, but I fear that this will be the case moreso if the courts don't send the right message to ambulance-chasing lawyers. Recently here in Australia the courts overruled on appeal a previous judgement which had awarded an injured tandam passenger a multi-million dollar payout. This young lady had sighed the waiver and thus accepted the risks inherent in skydiving. The court, on appeal from the dropzone, up-held the waiver and found no fault on the part of the dropzone and hence the money that this girl had been spending on traveling in South America will be returned to its rightful owners. I suppose all we can hope for is common-sense to prevail in any future incidents... JP.
