I understand what you mean, for a digital display, it all depends on what it's programmed to do when it fails. It could hold and display the last proper value, or it could be programmed to display a warning when it fails. You got to keep in mind the failure modes of analog and digital altimeters. For example, digital fails, you get nothing on the screen and you realise that it is broken the next time you look at it. Analog fails, needle get's stuck and the next time you see it, you still see an altitude reading.
