I'm really surprised at the readings you got. I've done exactly the same thing w/ my stiletto 120@~1.9, and I got a reading of 39 mph pointing it along the line of flight (as best I could). I would think that the Xaos would go a lot faster than the stiletto. Ted Like a giddy school girl.

What's your favorite HP 9 cell?
Professor replied to Professor's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I myself have never had a bad experience w/ a cobalt, but I've also never had anything like the performance they're hyped to have. OK openings, OK flight, nice landings. Nothing to rant or rave about. I think it's Atair's marketing and 'customer service' that is what causes all the animosity. Blues Ted Like a giddy school girl. -

Cool, thanks for the input. I left the faqtor off because I was under the impression that it was a mid range canopy, which you seem to confirm. I left the RAGE, Rage, and Katana off because they aren't available yet, but I thought the Blade was out. Hi Per's web page says it's out, but I don't know how long that's been true. I know the pink.at and die schurken web pages have shown those guys flying the blade for a while. It's strange to hear that the Cobalt isn't popular in Europe. Blues Ted Like a giddy school girl. -

OK, true, there are some heatwaves, a couple johnathans, some jedeis, but I was mainly talking about some of the newer tech stuff like the demon, blade, amax, firebolt, etc. I don't think that sort of stuff is widespread enough to get a proper representation in a pole like this. That's what I'm saying. I see piles of Cobalts (here in TX) and a lot of PD stuff (mostly stilettos and spectres). 1 guy I know owns a XF2, one owns 2 samurais, I've seen one vengance, one nitron, and basically zero of everything else. That's why I think it would be cool to see what people have flown. I'd be willing to bet most people have only jumped one or 2 different canopies on the list, and that was probably a stiletto and cobalt. The other stuff is just too rare. Yeah, it's not real suprising, is it. Although I didn't realize the Crossfire 2 was so popular. I've only seen two, and one was a demo. It would be nice to know what people voted for, and what else they flown. And what people were thinking of who voted for 'something else'. Ted Like a giddy school girl. -

I left the swoop stuff off on purpose. I was more interested in general purpose HP stuff. Blues Ted Like a giddy school girl. -
Rapidly decelerating. If you get unstable, you'll pop up in relation to everybody else, like a cork. This is very dangerous if you hit somebody else on the way up, because of the speed difference. Blues Ted Like a giddy school girl.

I left the Sabre and things like it off, since it's not really considered a high performance canopy (any more). Blues Ted Like a giddy school girl. -

I did exactly the same thing. I've got most of my jumps on a stiletto, but I prefer the XF2 that I demoed to it. Too bad there's so many other cool things to spend money on, or I'd have one. Blues Ted Like a giddy school girl. -

Something else! Who voted for that? And what were you thinking of? I only left a couple off, stuff I thought nobody would vote for. Ted Like a giddy school girl. -

Just curious, sorry about all the choices. I'd have to say I like the XF2 best of what I've flown (stilleto, cobalt, jedei, and nitron being the others) Blues. Ted Like a giddy school girl. -
Hey Drew, what kind of canopy is that in swoop4.jpg, with the diamonds on the bottom? Ted Like a giddy school girl.

Comp Cobalt 2 week review
Professor replied to kansasskydiver's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Ron, I've done this w/ my Stiletto 120 and my friends Cobalt 120. Not only were they the same size, they are almost exactly the same planform. Ted Like a giddy school girl. -
Crossfire-2 To be delieverred tomorrow
Professor replied to kansasskydiver's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
The demo I had opened great w/ just a standard pro pack. Not much stuffing, no nose rolling, quarter the slider and you're good to go. Another guy I know who owns one says he can't get it to open bad. Enjoy. Ted Like a giddy school girl. -
XF1 or XF2? I've jumped a nitron and a XF2, I'd say I like the XF2 better, if for no other reason than the opening. The XF2 119 I jumped seemed a lot like my stiletto 120 in toggles, riser pressure didn't build as fast, and it was a lot easier to keep in a dive. The nitron 135 I jumped had real light toggle pressure, moderate riser pressure, and more dive than the stiletto, but probably less than the XF2. If I was in the market for one, I'd go for the XF2. Sorry I couldn't help more. Blues, Ted Like a giddy school girl.

Isn't that Kim Lasher? Looks like there's some other SSM/Houston people on there too. Blues Ted Like a giddy school girl.

Hey Josh, Whats up? Glad to hear your doing OK. Will do. We're SCR ceromonies for Me, Voodew, Juju, and Christian, and probably some others, this weekend, so I'm sure we'll be drinking at least one. Maybe even two. Keep you head down over there, and good job. Blues Ted Like a giddy school girl.

Definitely a good idea. A good way to think of exit order is probably "slower fallers out earlier". At least for upwind jump run. Ted Ted Like a giddy school girl.

check this out. A discription of the advantages of cross braces. Ted Like a giddy school girl.

correct me if I am wrong but the line length wouldnt make it "swoop" better, but dive longer and give it more speed as the pendulum effect (swinging back under the canopy) would take a bit longer hence making it dive a little more. -yoshi Pendulum, exactly. There was a pretty good article about this in parachutist a while ago, unforunately I don't have that issue. The lines on larger canopies are longer, as well, though, so this could be playing a part in the behaviour Germain was describing. Cross braces keep the wing from distorting as much, making it more efficient. The benefit is lost at lower wingloads, so making large ones is pointless, since there are so few 260+ lbs people out there looking to run out super high speed landings. Ted Like a giddy school girl.
-
I talked to Brian Germain a while ago, when I was trying to get a Samurai demo, and he said that it seemed to him that a larger canopy at the same wing loading would swoop a little better. Also, I think that swoop specific canopies have longer line sets because it makes for better swoop. Ted Like a giddy school girl.

I've got a stiletto 120 with about 250 jumps (from me) on it. I've never chopped it. I've had it twist up a couple times, but always fly pretty much straight. I always try to make sure my pack job is semetrical, and have good body position (level hips, especially). Other than that, make sure the canopy itself is in good shape/in trim. Video on the net of 418 ft swoop??????
Professor replied to BluDvn222's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
The magnitude of the effect would be the same as downwind, for a given swoop, going downwind will add the same distance that going upwind would subtract. Ted Like a giddy school girl.
