  1. To call for someone's resignation is unavoidably contemptuous. Do you think it's respectful of the chain of command to insist your superior should be dismissed? My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?
  2. I think you missed the forest for the trees. Rummy says the comments issued by the editorials don't reflect opinions in the armed services. You just demonstrated that members in the armed services are restricted in expressing negative opinions of Rummy. QED My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. 3. Not sure what brand machines they use in Jersey, but there appears to be at least one instance where the dems were favored. Why does Diebold hate freedom? My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?
  4. Or like what would happen in Pakistan if Musharraf actually promoted democracy and stepped down? Islamists would take over. Or what will happen in Israel and Russia in coming years, as their demographics shift toward Muslim majorities? Israel is attacking the problem by walling off Islamic population centers and excising them from their nation, basically a case of international gerrymandering. Russia will probably just take the oppressive route, if I have to guess. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?
  5. So umm, what if the liberated people elect new, different, Islamic fascists into power. Like in Iran and in Palestine. Do we "liberate" them again? Keep on "liberating" them until they get the message? The author seems to think Iran is just going to go away if we ignore it...that's pure ignorance. This is a situation of culture conflict, not war per se, and neither military action nor democracy is a viable solution. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. 6. I'm rather convinced that the executive office wouldn't hesitate to sack anyone who expressed open displeasure with the current leadership. Much as MacArthur was sacked after criticizing Truman. It's as much a hallmark of obstinate and spiteful executive leadership as anything IMO that you don't hear much coming from the field. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. 7. Sounds like numbness to me. The nerves on the surface of your skin lose effectiveness and basically shut down for a while. Also your body reduces circulation to the skin and thus slows down the rate of heat transfer away from your body. After the initial shock of changing environment I bet these two factors are enough to eliminate cold as a distraction until your muscles, bones, and body core start dropping in temperature, causing stiffness, pain, and shivering respectively. For most people / most skydives it probably doesn't progress to serious hypothermia under ordinary skydiving conditions because the skydive is over before the effects can build and because healthy bodies are pretty good at reacting automagically. 8. Well, you don't have to vote on all the ballots. For instance I skipped all the ones where the number of marks allowed did not met or exceeded the number of candidates. edit: oops, got that backwards... There's a bit of electoral math it seems that was developed after our voting methods were standardized. And it's too bad, really. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. 9. I was in this situation, but I'm pretty sure I stayed within the same jurisdiction and as a result it wasn't an issue. I was waving around my ID and had utility bills with me, but they never asked to see anything. I did provide them with my name and address to match their books, and I had voted at this polling place before--as I understand it, you must only provide an ID the first time you vote on a registration here. 10. At my polling place they had a scantron-like paper based color in the box type of thing. I'm very glad they didn't have touchscreens. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?
  11. Well? Do explain, if you didn't vote. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?
  12. The USA doesn't set curricula. Curricula are set by states. States in turn delegate to various degrees onto counties and cities. Cities and counties in turn delegate to various degrees onto districts and individual schools. The whole thing is a mishmash. There are no universal nationwide standards (although there has been a push lately to at least test for basics, in the No Child Left Behind program...). That's public schools. Private schools & parents doing home schooling have nearly a free hand. In most places you'll find a fair degree of international history gets taught. My secondary school, a public school, had three years mandatory and common, followed by one year mandatory but selective. IIRC the years broke down as: 1- Asia, ME, and Africa 2- Europe 3- Americas 4- Mandatory choice between specialized topics, mostly focused on contemporary subjects My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. 14. The Luddites couldn't get along with the rest of society, the Amish seem to get along just fine. You can find various religious sects these days that eschew science. It seems empirically possible to eschew science for morals, but it poses a huge cognitive challenge for most people to come to terms with it. Such that most people don't run off and form Amish communities or become monks. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?
  15. Don't try to do it the other way around tho, if you skip the 1st half of a round trip ticket they usually cancel the whole thing. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?
  16. How about a city-wide computer database. Restaurants each get a terminal. For every order, the restaurant enters it into the database, and the database spits back a sin tax based on how much the particular glutton in question has eaten that day. Grocers too, with grocery taxes indexed by nutritional value and amortized over the shelf life of the product or some multiple of the number of servings against the glutton's outstanding inventory. No tax up to the maximum USRDAs, then progressively increasing tax. Just provide your state-issued ID for service. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. 18. Maybe we could use this technique on Cheney to figure out who he consults with on energy policy. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?
  19. I take it you don't read the perennial stories on simian investment strategies either. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?
  20. heh, does that apply to adult or embryonic research? I'd believe it applied to either. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?
  21. Which link tells how much has been invested in adult stem cell research vs embryonic? All the links do is affirm the consequent in the proposition, "if embryonic stem cell research is not productive, there will be no (or limited) reseach results". This is a logical fallacy, because there is another reason that explains why there are only limited returns right now -- artificially restricted funding. You can kick around the California number all you want, it's simply not enough money and not enough time to keep up with the decade of federal funding that's gone toward adult research. I looked it up, btw, in 2005 it was on the order of six hundred million coming out of the NIH annually toward stem cells, less than 10% going toward embryonic stem cells. According to wikipedia, FWIW. The California number, on the other hand, is billions put toward an endowment and not directly to actual research, and is currently tied up in litigation (as of July). 22. I'm not claiming to know that one is better than the other, but seeking to learn how Mr Master seems to know. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?
  23. That's called performance chasing, and it is an unsound financial strategy. It is also an unsound strategy for research policy. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?
  24. In what proportion to the investment in each? Can you not tell the difference between return and rate of return? It is fact that investment in one has been artificially restricted, to the benefit of the other. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. 25. How did you reach this conclusion without considering the level of investment? Is it something you take on faith or you do have a reason to believe one vs the other? My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?
