Post accident depression and doubt...
guineapiggie101 replied to guineapiggie101's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
how long has it been since your spine and tibia accident? I'm hoping to go to the DZ this weekend to hang out and watch jumpers. I didn't go last weekend (did some other stuff instead) and I miss it. I go to the otho doc for another recheck (and xray), the week of Chicks Rock. Hopefully the doc releases me to do a tandem that weekend. That would be fun. -
Hey, Ren Faire dancing is pretty cool!!!!

Post accident depression and doubt...

I think a lot of it has to do with me and my own personal feelings and perceptions, not how others treat me. I still have a lot of friends at the DZ and people are happy to see me when I show up. It's hard to explain. I just feel like "I am outside looking in", esp since I can't jump right now, and am even not sure if I will return to the sport. I am trying to re-establish other things in my life that I put aside while trying to get my "A" license. Kinda like not "putting all my eggs in one basket". I still try to go to the DZ at least one weekend day every week and will be going there for the next boogie they have. Gemini, I agree with you about the phases of recovery. I was kind of crestfallen when I went for my last checkup and asked the doc if I could do tandems yet, and he asked me to wait another 4 weeks until my next checkup to see how things are going (in other words, no definitive date). Besides toodling around in a boot and on crutches, I am back to a normal life. I drive and go out and stuff, so that is something to be happy about too. -
what size women are you looking for Shah? If you want size 6 and under, come to CA. Lots of those out here ;)

Ouch, that looks painful. Do you plan on continuing with AFF once you heal up? -

Billvon, you've hit upon my feelings exactly. I have talked to other, seasoned skydivers about my feelings and about what to do. In light of my accident and some other circumstances relating to my anxiety, I am leaning towards not continuing with getting my license. I still haven't made up my mind completely yet, but that is where I am leaning. I don't want to leave the sport, but I also am coming to realize how dangerous the sport is. I just wish I could find a middle ground and be able to enjoy the sport and deal with my mind crippling anxiety. Currently, I am exploring methods to deal with my anxiety so I can maybe, one day, return to doing solos. -

Is that common? Even for people with accidents that are NOT that serious? Also, did you find that hanging out at the DZ made you more depressed since you couldn't join in with your friends on doing jumps, etc? I usually hang out at the DZ most weekends, but sometimes it depresses me since I feel like I am not part of the culture there since I can't jump at this time. I miss it terribly and watching people jump, hearing people talk about AFF, about jumping in groups, etc., brings it painfully home to me that I am not a part of this anymore. I have been trying to develop a weekend life outside of the DZ. I have hung out with other friends, spent some time with my husband and his friend, etc., but every time I drive by the DZ (I take the expressway that goes by the DZ, every weekend, on my way up north), I look for parachutes and realize how much I miss this. I am conflicted, and wondering if this is a common feeling among injured skydivers who take a few months (if not longer) to heal. How did you deal with it? -
looks like fun. I love haunted Halloween stuff, esp haunted corn mazes!!!!

I think video is a great learning tool, esp if you are a student that has problems passing levels. When I was going through AFF, I was having problems with a lot of my levels (had to repeat AFF 3 ten times ). Despite the expense, I decided to get my jumps videoed. That way, during my debrief, my instructors and I could watch the video and see where I went wrong, and what I needed to fix. Yes, video is not cheap, but it is a great learning tool. It's also fun to look back at your old videos to see how you did in AFF

Nice, that's very quick healing time for an ankle fracture. -

Yikes!!! How long did it take you to heal up from that? I'm a post AFF student, pre A-license, and I've screwed up early. Had a bad landing (flared too early) on my AFF 4 jump and sprained my ankle. Since then, I've hurt myself a few times, finally got off AFF and was on my 2nd solo, when I had another bad landing (I was confused and made some bad decisions), and had a compound fracture of my tib/fib. Still healing up from that. Good luck with continuing with AFF. It is a lot of fun. :) -
Shah, nice vacuum. I have one just like that. And you're pretty limber for a guy.

Elsinore has a great vibe and the jumpers there are very friendly. I've jumped there since end of Jan. Even though I am not jumping at this time (due to injury), I still hang out there on weekends. And yes, Chicks Rock is at the end of Sept. Its supposed to be an awesome boogie.

Transferring files from iMac to MacBook Pro
guineapiggie101 replied to guineapiggie101's topic in The Bonfire
I want to migrate the entire iMac HD over to my MacBook Pro. Right now, I don't have the iMac here, just only the external HD with the Time Machine backups. I'm going back to my place today and will reset the MacBook Pro to the factory settings, and try again to transfer the entire iMac HD. -

I went and did that late last night using Migration Assistant and the external HD that I back my iMac into. It worked, but NOT all the files transferred over (I'm missing some music on my iTunes, pics on iPhoto, etc). Going to try from scratch again today (aka restore MacBook Pro to factory settings and try again). If that don't work, will take the laptop to my place where the iMac is and try a direct transfer -

I bought a new MacBook Pro today. It's operating system is the new OS Lion. I already have an iMac (bought early 2010). Normally, I back up the iMac onto an external HD. The iMac's operating system is Mac OS X. I am having issues downloading my last iMac backup onto the new MacBook Pro. That's usually the way to transfer files from one Mac to another. Not sure what I am doing wrong and it is frustrating me!!! Macs are supposed to be easy and idiot-proof. Help???? -

Yikes!!! It must have taken a lot of courage to come back and finish AFf and go onto get your license. To be out for a year, was it hard on you? Even though I am not jumping right now, I still go hang at the DZ on weekends to see friends, watch people jump, and it makes me sad, because I see how much fun people are having, and I feel like I am missing out on all of it because I can't get my license for awhile, and I won't be able to jump for awhile either. Brian Germain's book is a good suggestion. I will look into that. JerseyShawn, the way you put it, learning to pilot a plane sounds appealing too. I have been on small Cessna planes as a passenger while a friend was flying the plane, and it was a lot of fun -

Flying a plane is not the same as flying yourself out in the sky. I also want to be able to fly with others too. -

I am going to let myself heal completely before I jump again solo. That is the most prudent thing to do. BUT, as soon as I can begin to put weight on the leg, I'm going to do a tandem or two, because that is a lot of fun, and I miss being in the sky THAT much. I am very angry with myself for what happened, since it was totally unnecessary and has set me back a lot. With all the jumps I have done, I should have known better. I don't know if there is a "right" reason for jumping. I think everybody has their own reason for jumping, and to that person, it is the "right" reason irregardless of what others might think. -

I guess I shoulda done a search :( I cant wait till I can at least do a tandem. I miss being in the sky sooo much. I am impatient when it comes to healing. Hopefully I can just leave the hardware in their and not have to worry about it. Do u think doing a tandem too early in the healing process can do damage to my leg??? Hoping to be able to do a tandem after my doc appt at the end of the month.
