overawed by all the cuteness
guineapiggie101 replied to guineapiggie101's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Yeah, wearing garb can be really hot, esp on warm days. That is part of my fencing garb, although I wasn't wearing a doublet at the time. I have lots of garb. -

Hey guys, thanks for all the responses. You've made me laugh. Too bad I'm not a drinker :( , heh heh! (I'm not a prude either though). I look forward to jumping again later this week, or this weekend (hopefully it doesn't rain). BTW, this is not how I usually am. I'm more shy and reserved in public, vs over a computer screen. -

haha, I haven't done fencing in a long while, so I might be kinda rusty. I can just imagine myself dressed in ren/fencing garb and showing up at the DZ. Like this: (I'm the short one in the pic) http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o177/guineapiggie/3495312585_c1bc4a8f5e_b.jpg -

in retrospect, putting up this thread was dumb of me and makes me look bad. Is there any way I can have the thread removed. I do appreciate everybodys' posts and advice, but this thread makes me look like a overanxious worrywart. -

Actually I do feel accepted at the DZ I am learning at. I am just a bit overawed by most of the cute jumpers there. It seems most jumpers (esp the women) are young and cute. As for my personal life, I just don't talk about skydiving anymore to my husband. Best way to deal with it. -

Thanks! Yeah, skydiving is a bit "off the wall". For those of you who are married, have relationships, etc., did you find it hard to keep at skydiving, esp if your SO, family, friends, thought what you did was crazy and stupid and didn't want to hear about it? -

Yes, I tend to be the overthinker Actually I don't feel "lost" at the DZ I jump at. The people there have been very welcoming to me and I have had great instruction there. Ron, I'm not looking for dates, just to socialize along with learning how to skydive. I'm more of the introvert, and I wanted to get into skydiving as a way to "get out of my shell a bit" and prove to people, that although I am small, I can do things that are out of the ordinary. -

I guess I was referring more to the "social" aspect of the sport. Not being "good on the eyes" might not help me be social. I'll use an example. For many years, I was in involved in the SCA (its a medieval reenactment society). I found it easy there to socialize and meet people and make friends there because it was more of a "low-key" hippie vibe. I was involved in doing fencing reenactments, which was cool and a great way to meet people. I do ask questions when its necessary and my instructors have been great in the aspect, with helping me go over stuff that I need to work on. -

As a newbie AFF student, I have noticed that most women who skydive are young, cute, and very limber. As a potential skydiver who is almost 38 years old, extremely short, a bit on the chunky side, and not very outgoing (very shy), once I get my license, do I have a chance of doing ok in this sport? I see many "type A" personalities around. So far, since my issue with my first AFF jump, I have been doing quite well. Have done some tunnel time and am on AFF 3. Will be doing AFF 3 sometime this week (if weather holds out since rain is in the forecast). My instructors, as well as people at the DZ have been very supportive and helpful to me, which is great, since not many people understand why I want to do this. My husband still thinks what I am doing is a bit off the wall. -

Well I am scheduled for some tunnel time this Fri at 10 AM. Hopefully it all works out. -

Thanks for your suggestions. I did barely pass my repeat AFF 1 jump on Sat (yay). I was a lot calmer and actually gave myself a pep talk on the way to the DZ (about being confident and sure of myself). In the next week or so, I am going to schedule some time at the wind tunnel at Perris, to work on stabilizing and arching (I have problems with my arch). Everybody says that tunnel time will help me tighten up the arch. I hope it will also help me get over the fear that I have when I jump out of the plane (since it seems I forget EVERYTHING when I am out there). BTW, in regards to my "unique situation", I am jumping a student rig that was modified so I can pull a ripcord (due to my short stature and my short arms). -

Can tunnel time count towards one of the AFF level skydives? Glad to see that tunnel time really helped you out. I am hoping it will help with my arching. I am still having issues with my arch. -

Got up early and went to the DZ to redo AFF 1. I was in a calmer, more upbeat mood today and was more relaxed. I took people's advice and kept calm and BREATHED. My 2 instructors helped me keep my calm and made it less stressful for me. I managed to pull the ripcord but still forgot a bunch of stuff. Before I go and do level 2, my instructors suggest that I spend some tunnel time at Perris so I can practice my arch (which I had problems with). I plan to try to get some tunnel time sometime in the next 2 weeks before doing level 2. Overall, today was ALOT better than yesterday -

Very true. I now know what to expect and it is not some "scary" unknown to me. Tomorrow should be a lot easier, I hope :) -

thanks! I think this jump was me getting over the fear of the solo jump. I think tomorrow's jump will be better. I do have confidence in myself. Just have to keep calm. -

Yes, I want it for myself. It is fun. I just have to calm down and not freak out. I have a nervous-type personality. I am glad to see I am NOT the only one who has failed the first AFF -
failed first AFF jump

Finally did my first AFF jump today with the modified rig and I failed. I went through a review of the ground course and had no problem remembering the dive flow, what to pull, what to look for, etc. When I went up on the plane, I freaked out and literally almost didn't jump out the door. I forgot everything and my instructors had to pull for me. I did better when it came to landing I am going to conquer this and redo AFF 1 jump tomorrow. I need some ideas on how to calm down and not freak out when I jump. I am still on edge right now, even a few hours after this. I will pass this though. -
Thanks for explaining this to me in detail. Now I have a better understanding of the situation.

I think they are going to modify the pull-thing so it is a ripcord and so I can pull it in front. I have short arms and have a problem with comfortably reaching the knob to release the main chute.

Just found out today that it will cost me a few hundred for the DZ to get the student rig modified for me (not definite on cost yet), before I can do even AFF 1 and continue onwards (I think it has to be sent back to the mfg for the mod). I am OK with paying for the mods because I know it is for my own safety. Just want to know if it would be more cost effective to get a used rig and have the mods done on that, and for me to go through the levels that way vs. having the student rig modified and then, at the end of all my lessons, me still having to go out and get my own rig and having it modified? I want to go through the lessons first before I make such a big outlay of money on rigs and such. Also, are modifications usually very expensive?

there are some height issues to be worked around, but all is well. Once everything is worked out, I think I am going to try to do 2 levels each time I am out there. I dunno. -

I'm pretty sure I did level 4 three times in a day... Does that count? Don't feel had, we had oen guy do 14 level 6's! ouch. I hope I don't have to do too many repeats of a level. -
