As it happens, I have found someone relatively local who will let me use their facilities. I know in the long term I will need my own machines etc, but for now I just need someone to show me the ropes and fill me in with some rigging knowledge and experience.
-
Hmm. And yes I am looking for a new machine. Well actually, I looking to use someone's loft, that way I have all their equipment and expertise on hand.

Here's the corner seam where the stabiliser meets the tail. http://imgur.com/a/5tYT4 On the subject of bottom seams, I am really tempted to do what I did last time and make them flat and simple.
-
@ineed2fly I thought there might be some force at the end of the reinforcing tape for the bridle on the topskin. I changed the v tapes on the loaded ribs to meet there so the force can go down the lines. Is this completely unnecessary? @RiggerLee What do we think of this non loaded bottom seam? http://imgur.com/a/813Tm

1 5/8" for the mini ring set and 2 3/8" for the standard ring set apparently. Here's the manual if you want it
-
Oh yeah, of course I'm not sewing real harnesses, I just wanted to play about with my machine. @RiggerLee, what I have done in the past for the three centre cell ribs is to have just two crossports like this: [inline centre_ribs.png] Should I have no crossports at all in the centre cell or will that be fine?
-
Yeah, there are a few of us like that. No, that's true, removable sliders do a lot for canopy flight. You're not crazy in that sense.

Slightly better quality pictures: http://i.imgur.com/97PQsz6.jpg http://i.imgur.com/Eb1A91u.jpg I popped a few drops of oil in my shitty sewing machine, played with the tension a bit and managed to get it to sew through 2 layers of type 7, 2 layers of type 8, and three layers of type 4 webbing. RiggerLee was right, sewing nose lips is hard. I'm glad I decided to get some practice first. Sorry for the terrible quality, but you just might be able to make out a non loaded top seam here. [inline 1.jpg]

I got my huge roll of fabric delivered today, so I suppose that means I can actually start construction. [inline stab_tech_small.png] [inline bottom_tech_small.png] [inline 210_pd9_cell_slider_small.png] Parts less seam allowance [inline parts_small.png]

For what it's worth, I think this simulator is fantastic.

It's a Raven reserve being packed, so what... OH SHIT.
-
All things being equal, two rectangular reserves with the same area, aspect ratio, rib profile, line lengths etc can have really quite different flight characteristics. But not all things are equal. For a start, manufacturers can't even agree on a standard measuring method, so comparing one reserve from one company with one from another becomes really quite difficult, and all attempts to get some hard numbers end up being shat through a bin bag. Like others have said, the best way to acquaint yourself with any new canopy is to jump it.

I did some more slope soaring on the moors and this time got it on camera. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Dof6XwXq5g Also I now have a decent headset if anybody wants to talk about canopies on Skype.
-
It'll help keep the canopy pressurized, but it won't stop the nose folding under at negative angles of attack. There really isn't much you can do about that, barring rigid lines or something.

Is 20+ years too old for a reserve parachute?
Quagmirian replied to PixieUK's topic in Gear and Rigging
I'm hijacking this thread because I have a similar query and I don't want to post a whole new topic. I'm looking at putting together a similar cheapo rig with something like a Raven 2 and a Fury 220 for a few hundred quid. Apart from what's already been written, what problems am I likely to have with this? -
I have a new rib design... again. This one's for a 7 cell. I have turned to the dark side and introduced a nose lip. [inline new_rib_small.png] Here's where I am with the project right now. I'm saving up a bit of money so that I can buy proper materials, but one thing I don't have is anywhere to build my new canopy. Sure, I can do the sewing on my home machine in my bedroom, but I don't have anywhere to cut out the pieces. I could really do with a rigging loft of something similar. Also, does anyone know what crossports are actually for?

Wind tunnel for static line progression students?
Quagmirian replied to pchapman's topic in Safety and Training
10 mins of tunnel time worked wonders for my 15 second delays. No more spinning, good heading control, and a better feel for the air. -
Just go to Lake Elsinore. It's a lot like Spain but everybody there speaks English. They still drive on the wrong side of the road though.

It's a difficult one in my opinion. I would find it difficult to enjoy the DZ experience if there weren't decent facilities, yet at the same time I want the DZO to also be focusing on providing great skydiving as well. It must be hard to juggle it all and please everyone. -

Parachute Performance Factors

Thanks for that. -
I have attempted back and head up flying without coaching or briefs on kit I knew wasn't freefly friendly. The worst thing that happened was that my legstraps got a bit loose, but looking back I am becoming increasingly aware of dumb I was.

You'll just have to measure them from an existing canopy.
