But when an airplane crashes it is reported as more of a rare incident When a cop makes a bad move it is reported as if it happens everyday Cops make bad moves every day. Cops don't have to kill people to make bad moves. We hear about near misses with airplanes. About runway incursions. And we know about things like cockpit resource management and the facing of cold facts in order to make things safer. We are also hearing a lot lately about pilots being unable to handle some basic and simple issues. Even about pilots unable to manually fly an airplane killing people. People wanting to make pilots better. To make airlines better. For public safety and perception. Why should cops be treated differently? Cops have a tough job. I seriously doubt I could do it. But when cops fuck up it should be discussed how to prevent it from happening. I agree with everything you post but, cop issues are reported as if all cops are bad and only a few are good In reality, it is opposite of this In reality, only a small portion of the public are violent criminals, and yet we aren't allowed to get decent tint on windows in a lot of place to "protect the police", or no-knock raids are used to knock down doors and flashbangs are thrown in cribs. Not so fun when you're assumed to be bad because of other people, is it? cavete terrae.

Statistically speaking, it probably does. If true, the news would be similar day to day All else being equal, yes. However, that's not the case, as there are many other factors in what gets reported, besides what is happening. cavete terrae.

Maybe. I wasn't there, so I can't say for sure. cavete terrae.

Iranian fighters helping Iraqi troops fight ISIS of 'great concern'??

...which sometimes leads to no-knock raids on bad info, which can lead to dead cops or worse yet, dead members of the public defending themselves from violent home invaders. Just like how we sometimes invade countries based on bad info, and get our soldiers killed or worse yet, people defending their home from violent invaders. cavete terrae. -

Hmmm. From my experience, Australia and New Zealand are pretty easy to get into as long as you have a) A useful skill on the skilled migrant list. b) a Decent level of education c) the hygiene factors - not too old, in good health, english speaking. If you don't have those three things - you probably don't have the right to be here. It is a LOT of bloody paperwork though. I had all of the above, and one TINY paperwork fuckup by my employer torched it all. Like, even Immi was like "yeah it's clear that it shouldn't matter but it does so get the fuck out. Thanks for the $10k you've spent through the application process though, sucker" I did get a kick out of being able to say to people "You know I'm on a 457, right?" when they'd rant and rave about "fucking 457 cunts" stealing Australian jobs, though! cavete terrae. -

I've written about this dozens of times in threads you were a participant in, so forgive me if I chalk you up as one of those people who are so fossilized in their prejudices that facts cannot penetrate their skull (or gut, in the case of "truthiness"). For the rest, there are only four ways to legally immigrate to the US: 1. You can be sponsored by an immediate family member who is a US citizen. 2. You can be sponsored by an employer, provided they prove you have skills they have searched for and were unable to find within the US, and provided they are willing to pay a lot in USCIS fees. 3. You can buy your way in by investing $1 million dollars in an approved business. 4. You can self-sponsor (no family or employer sponsor) only if you can prove you have exceptional skills in the sciences, arts, or athletics, such that it is clearly in the national interest to have you here. I might note that a small number of green cards are awarded by the lottery system, but citizens of Mexico and the majority of other Latin American countries (as well as Canada, most European countries, China, India, and a bunch of other countries) are excluded entirely from the green card lottery. Most people enter under #1, and somewhat lesser but still significant numbers under #2. Only a few have $1,000,000 in loose change to invest (#3), and #4 only includes people like athletes who we want to have on our Olympic teams, and people of that caliber of skill in a handful of fields. For those who do have an immediate family member who is a US citizen, or do not have technical skills attractive enough to entice an employer to deal with seemingly endless paperwork and thousands of dollars in fees, there is essentially no way to come here legally. Ellis Island is a distant memory, the US is no longer welcoming of the tired, the poor, etc". Don After putting up with a very similar system with a tremendous amount of institutional bias while I lived and worked in Australia for 8 years, I am exceedingly sympathetic to those who try to move to the US. It's a fucking nightmare. To a certain extent I'm glad I couldn't get permanent residency since it finally gave me the impetus to move back to the US which has dramatically increased my quality of life and overall happiness, but I'm no less understanding of the struggles of those who try to emigrate to any country. cavete terrae. -

We've armed and aided the Iranians. We've armed and aided the Iraqis. Iranians are arming and aiding Iraqis. We're suddenly upset? Fuck that, we just need to stop being involved over there at all. Iran, Iraq, Israel, Saudi, Egypt, Yemen, etc can handle their own shit for a while, we've got our own issues to deal with. cavete terrae. -

Anecdotal funny story: My girlfriend's sister had her identity stolen, and her credit rating improved because the person who took out a credit card in her name made all the payments in full and on time at the end of the month. For 6 years. cavete terrae. -

Once again: Fucking. Corn. Lobby. Buncha asswipes living the dream on taxpayer subsidies and government protection. If actual corn wasn't so delicious I'd wish crop failure on them all just to see HFCS and ethanol industries die. cavete terrae.

I for one am happy to be an early adopter for an all-electric self-driving car, as long as it has all the creature comforts I want. That's the issue I have with most of the hybrids out there… they're efficient, but that's not the only factor in my vehicle purchases. Hell, if we're being honest it's not even in the top 10. cavete terrae.

I don't know for sure, but I'm willing to guess we have a higher ethanol content. Not only is it worse for fuel economy, it's worse for the fucking car too. Bingo Ethanol contains less BTU's per gallon Even at 10% gas milage is reduced Three words: Fucking. Corn. Lobby. cavete terrae.

I'm sooooooo hoping the Tesla Model 3 is everything I want it to be so I can buy one. The Prius is pretty cool in a lot of ways but there are a few things about it that I can't overcome my feelings about so I can't bring myself to buy one. cavete terrae.

It's not a party issue. Both major parties are awful, and supporting either of them is supporting more shittiness in the future. They're also not as different as their supporters try and pretend, except in a few points. One that I do take issue with is the torture one, you can't exclusively chalk that up to republicans. The rest… probably fair enough, but it's disingenuous to pretend that the democrats aren't doing piles of horrible shit, too. Shutting the DHS down is a step in the right direction, even if the republicans are doing it for dumb reasons. Next let's shut down the IRS, the DEA, close some bases overseas, stop funding and supplying militaries overseas, etc. cavete terrae.

Either you're being deliberately obtuse or you have some kind of autism that stops you from being able to relate to other people's thought processes. For the vast, vast majority of muslims it doesn't matter a tinker's cuss what's in the Koran, they are just normal people who have no intention of cutting anyone's head off. There are not one billion muslims ready to cut your head off and there never will be. It is a fantasy designed to justify your desire to see millions of innocent people burn. It's sick. So your saying the vast majority of Muslims do not believe in the Koran? I am sure that is news to them. Reminder: Jews are supposed to kill people who try and convert them from Judaism. cavete terrae. -
So your belief is that the special tax treatment carved out for the extremely wealthy over the past thirty years is both justified and is not something that should be subject to change? Could you possibly see your way clear to support extremely wealthy people paying the same percentage of their income in income and FICA taxes as a person who makes 100,000 per year? Would that be fair? This is a yes or no question. Why is it that income that is EARNED by one's work taxed at HIGHER rates than UNEARNED income that comes from interest or investments? In other words, why is money that is made simply by having a lot of money taxed at LESSER rates than money that is earned by actual labor? We the people sure are a gullible lot to put up with that bullshit. The tax code used be set up totally opposite to how it is now. Since the Reagan disaster of an administration, the tax code has been rewritten to flip this 180 degrees. And the gullible buy this as being a good thing. Trickle down economics was correctly called "voodoo economics" by Bush1. I describe it as "piss on the little people" economics. As Leona Helmsley said, only little people pay taxes. My answer is very simple: I don't want their taxes raised to match mine. I want mine lowered to match theirs. Well, eliminating the Department of Defense would help reduce the discretionary financial needs of the government more than any other action. static.nationalpriorities.org/images/fb101/2014/presidents-proposed-discretionary-spending.png And before you attack "entitlements", heed This Guy. DoD needs a visit from a big, big pair of pruning shears. The entire F-35 program is demonstrative of how fundamentally retarded our spending is. Also DHS, most of it can just be thrown away. Most of our foreign military aid, especially Israel, Egypt, Saudi, etc… IRS… I'm a BIG fan of the idea of substantial government reduction. cavete terrae.

I was hoping there'd be a mention of "the lifestyle she became accustomed to during the marriage" or similar, so I could say "She can get accustomed to getting her own damned money". Alas, I can only say I don't want to raise taxes on the exceptionally rich, even if their spending might strike me as ludicrous. cavete terrae.
