I worded it poorly. I meant to put "there may be a god, but I don't know" cavete terrae. -

February! You should come down to LA. Have a nice long boring drive followed by hijinks at a chinese buffet. It's LA, there's gotta be one somewhere cavete terrae. -

Yes, Brandon will soon be making good money, but consider this: he has to pay malpractice insurance, too. That's not as cheap as health insurance, thanks to the worthless litigious assholes that permeate society. A good friend of my family is a neurosurgeon, has never had a malpractice claim against him, and pays EIGHTY-TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS PER YEAR in malpractice insurance. At the time, that was something like 25% of his income. Then he still gets to pay income taxes, so on, so forth. Don't kid yourself, doctors aren't getting off light. Yes, the medical industry is very fucked up, mostly due to insurance companies and aforementioned litigious assholes. There's no easy solution to it, and I sure as hell don't think socialized healthcare is the answer. cavete terrae. -
HD learning priority: Stable from exit to track, or transitioning?
grue replied to grue's topic in Freeflying
I'm definitely planning on getting some help with it, I'm just wondering if I might not be better off waiting until I'm more stable before I start doing that. Since I'm still all over the place when I try and go sit -> HD, I figured I want to get that at least halfway predictable... but then again, like I said, I've only done a few jumps, so that might come quickly. I'll report back after the weekend, maybe even with video! cavete terrae. -
You never need to worry about your toilet having someone else drop things in the hole. cavete terrae.

I only have the urge to look for one toilet when I need to lose a bodily fluid? cavete terrae.

Unfortunately, today's politically correct string of perpetual bullshit would have people think otherwise. Not everyone gets to be a winner, not everyone's going to go to college. As a matter of fact, not everyone's going to graduate high school (don't get me started on the effects of spending a disproportionate amount of effort on students who don't care and would have dropped out in the old days, compared to those who do care and show great potential, but are fucked out of it by stupid educational laws), and not everyone will be a great leader. Whel Halfwit Harry can't open the milk jug for cereal at age 12 because he always turns the cap the wrong way, and you're still telling him he's going to be a doctor, you might want to reexamine your approach to giving life advice, because some roads are going to have limited access, and he doesn't have the right card to get past the guard shack. People need to accept this. There's always going to be a need for janitors, traffic cops, busboys, sewer jockeys, and other undesireable jobs. If you don't like it, that's fine, but you're not going to change it. If you're religious, you can blame your god. If you're not religious, you can blame people for fucking the stupid but hot people and spitting out stupid babies. Maybe a few million years down the road, everyone will have the equiv of a 175 IQ on today's scale, but that time isn't now. It's shitty, but you know what? That's how it works. Life is short and it sucks a lot of the fucking time, but it's all we've got. cavete terrae. -

HD learning priority: Stable from exit to track, or transitioning?
grue replied to grue's topic in Freeflying
In general, should someone learning HD be working on going HD right from exit until going flat for deployment, or should I hold it as long as possible, go to sit, and try and transition back? I'm in the very early stages at the moment, I've only done a few dives really trying to work on my HD, and what I've been doing is dropping HD into the relative wind, and when I invariably fall out of the HD 4 seconds later, I go back to my sit, turn 90 degrees off the flight line, and work on going back into the headdown. Just not sure what's the best way to be doing this. cavete terrae. -

gee thanks. Make it even more of an expensive sport. Go ahead and unionize... enjoy it when the only people jumping are doctors, lawyers, and professional athletes. More expensive jumps = less jumpers, don't fool yourself. I love this sport more than just about anything, and it's already very very borderline in terms of costs. If my jump tickets go up $5 (or more?)/jump because I'm suddenly paying for someone's health insurance, I'm gonna have to jump less, or not jump at all. Fuck that shit. If you guys don't want to take the job because you don't get health insurance, someone will. This isn't an industry vital to humanity, so there's not a lot of money in it. Health insurance is for cooks, police officers, doctors, architects, and other people who have jobs necessary to society. Sorry, but "training people jumping out of airplanes for shits and giggles" isn't one of those. Then again, maybe you can have free insurance, but you have to pay for your "work" jumps. How's that sound? Oh, and I'm sure airborne soldiers make more money jumping than not, but they have the biggest money wasters in the world backing them: Governments. additional edit: Yes, it does suck when people get hurt, but health insurance isn't the most expensive thing in the world if you shop around. I was paying about $80/mo before I left the US through Blue Cross Blue Shield. cavete terrae. -
you wont be jumping 30mph winds here in OZ if you are abiding by the Op-Regs. Our maximum wind speed is 25knotts 25 kts is marginally under 30mph. Close enough :) cavete terrae.

Not so with Bill Watkins, the mercurial, salty-mouthed Texan who runs the $15 billion hard-drive king Seagate Technology. At a San Francisco dinner on Tuesday evening, he was candid about his company's ultimate mission: "Let's face it, we're not changing the world. We're building a product that helps people buy more crap - and watch porn." and there is NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT! cavete terrae.

what's the big deal? you have a new canopy.....get to work. You go ahead and jump a ten knot gust swing, I'm sure as hell not going to I'll jump 25-30mph STEADY winds, but not swinging all over the place. cavete terrae.
