  1. I wouldn't recommend anyone travel to either, right now. cavete terrae.
  2. If you can't be part of the solution, there's a hell of a lot of money to be made prolonging the problem as a consultant. cavete terrae.
  3. and those DZOs are dicks as well. cavete terrae.
  4. IN MY DAY WE STARTED CARS WITH CRANKS AND DIDN'T WORRY ABOUT DEAD BATTERIES cavete terrae.
  5. The only downside to a terrorist attack killing every member of congress would be that people would think we should replace them. Every law that needs to exist already does, the only thing Congress should be doing is repealing the laws that SHOULDN'T exist, but they're all too corrupt to do it. cavete terrae.
  6. It's their right to do that. It's my right to call them selfish cowards. In a case such as you mention where they're intentionally trying to make sure people keep dying, I'd say substantially worse. Yes, it is your right, and it's my right to believe you're acting like a an ass. You think anyone that isn't for skydiving is somehow vehemently against it. You're going a long way with your logic saying that if a whuffo family member of a deceased jumper won't release equipment for inspection that they are "intentionally trying to make sure people keep dying". Based on your logic, if someone doesn't try to help you, they must be trying to kill you. Geez, Dood. Um, you might want to re-read what you posted, and what I replied to: " For many of those people, helping in the analysis would be akin to helping the sport - the sport that killed their family member as they see it." To intentionally withhold something that might help prevent deaths is ABSOLUTELY intentionally trying to make sure people keep dying. I'm NOT saying that's what is happening here, it was a reply to your posting that as a hypothetical. cavete terrae.
  7. http://www.biblica.com/bibles-for-typhoon-devastated-philippines1 Are these fucking idiots serious? cavete terrae.
  8. Hey buddy, I was in a similar situation to you. Being a big guy (with a long torso, to boot), my options were effectively zero for used gear that would fit comfortably. I bought an Infinity and had it built so I could tightly fit a 210 main, now it snugly fits a 190, and some day when I feel like downsizing to a 170 that won't be a problem either. If you do want to get three canopy sizes out of your container and the manufacturer indicates it's ok, I STRONGLY STRONGLY STRONGLY recommend buying a fairly well-used canopy for the biggest one. Several dz.com members can attest to what the packing was like on my 210 since it only had a couple dozen jumps on it when I bought it, and getting it into the bag was hellish at best. cavete terrae.
  9. IIRC, the AADs went back to the families, who declined to provide them to Airtec for examination. The family, from their perspective, may want to have some independent third-party download that data,to prevent any falsifications that might occur to hide faults by the equipment manufacturers, to protect themselves from a lawsuit. I'm not saying that such a thing would happen, but from the perspective of a grieving family, looking in at a tight-knit skydiving community, they might think like that. That could be why they're holding off on letting the manufacturer look at it. To them, it's like letting the fox guard the chicken coop, or letting police investigate their own misconduct. That's a suitable choice. Not letting the data out in any form is a total dick move, though. cavete terrae.

  11. Further, there are many smaller countries where the government is pretty awful--Somalia, UAE, and Haiti come to mind. Pretty much every government is awful, but imagine if those you mentioned were bigger countries… cavete terrae.
  12. Has it? Where? The us, china, Russia, and Australia is getting there. That's not even counting historical empires. Those are vastly different systems of government with vastly different outcomes. I would posit that the differences between them are much larger than the differences between some of those countries and much smaller countries (US and Australia w/ England for example). Empires are different. They are pretty much exploitative in design. I never said they're similar governments, I simply put forth that the larger the area to govern, with a large population, the shittier the government will likely be. cavete terrae.

  16. Shitty parents are always going to be shitty. I don't accept "…but think of the children!" as a valid opposition to anything. cavete terrae.
  17. http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/jtypes2.asp Predicting a lot higher proportion of a certain type than one would normally see in a population… cavete terrae.
  18. Parents who don't let their kids have a childhood. I agree - But beer is a bit much for a 9 yo. Maybe just a joint or two. But alcohol? I mostly mean the types that make the kids wear 6 layers of body armor and a HAZMAT suit to leave the house. cavete terrae.
  19. how much is something like that, anyway? Searched and found this . . . Reversal seems to be about 2K to 5K Seems reasonable. cavete terrae.

  21. I'd do it for the right amount of coached tunnel time, or the right amount of jump tickets cavete terrae.
  22. Notice what every large country with a large, spread out population has in common? Their governments don't have the faintest goddamned idea what they're doing. Now scale up… cavete terrae.
