In my time off from regularly jumping, I forgot one thing…
grue replied to grue's topic in The Bonfire
When I jumped a couple of weeks ago I used a rental rig (my reserve was out of date), and I did about 30 practice pulls (and EPs!) on the ground because the rig fit differently. sure enough I got nothin' but air on the first try in the air cavete terrae. -

You damned well know that's true as well cavete terrae. -
I will admit I was quite impressed with the GnR version, but Axl Rose is still a complete asshole for fucking over all his band mates. FIFY There isn't enough time to go into all the reasons he is an asshole. But if we stop listening to someone's music or watching their movies because they're assholes, we'll have nothing left to listen to or watch cavete terrae.

That's funny, I was listening to it as you posted! GnR version of Knockin' on Heaven's door beats Dylan's original, btw. cavete terrae.

Mark my words, someone's gonna bring up Johnny Cash's cover of NIN - Hurt. I'm gonna respect their opinion, but disagree. For me, however, I've got a few that I'd have to go through my music to remember but I know I've got 'em! For the record, I agree with yours. cavete terrae.

Jewbag sucks at being a hanger. Ask him about the time I dragged him and my girlfriend to something ridiculous like 170mph (I'd have to look at my logs, but something like that) in a hybrid I'll have to look at my logbook because I remember we hauled ass. He was really fun to jump with. Here's one with JB (left) and my friend Wes (middle) and I (right). Wes and I flew base on the hybrid with JB. Beautiful CK sunset. Actually, that hybrid was my B License jump IIRC. Just don't let him teach you how to land in the vicinity of parked cars cavete terrae.

I completely agree. There are a whole lot of things that could be done to make learning packing easier... but it seems that far too often there is a sense of "I learned the hard way, you can too!" Either that, or packing is taught by the professional packers, who have a conflict of interest. It is in the professional packer's best interest for the student to NOT learn to pack well. Things I DON'T see done with students learning to pack: ---Start with a ragged out F-111 canopy and let them master the process first, then learn to apply it to the ZP canopy. ---Start with a smaller canopy and then move up to the huge student canopy. ---Teach any of the alternate bagging methods for the folds (such as above). ---Or, heaven forbid, teach psycho packing as an intro... and then advance them to folding later. I believe that a clean psycho pack is FAR safer than a sloppy folded pack which may let the slider migrate down or the brake lines move around front. As a novice, it was a slammer opening which inspired me to learn to psycho pack. I started flat packing a 282sqft Raven IV as a student, ragged-out F11, then moved to pro packing. When I got my first canopy (a nearly-new Fusion 210) I thought I was the worst packer in the world because I simply couldn't get the fucker in the bag on a regular basis. We're talking 40 minute packjobs. I went to Eloy a few months later and one of their packers told me never to bring my rig back to her Eventually I got a bridle extension and started psycho packing (which I don't get why everyone freaks out about), and everything got a lot easier. My second canopy was a Fusion 190 and as Precision officially recommends the psycho pack I'm still doing it. That said, when I used a borrowed rig last week I did my first pro pack in about 7 years on it, and it was hilariously frustrating because I was so out of practice. cavete terrae. -

Implications/viability of tandem pax/student with bad knee
grue replied to grue's topic in Tandem Skydiving
Not a chance. I take responsibility for my own choices and encourage others to do the same. I do not, however, know much about tandems so I'm deferring to expert advice Yeah that's the plan. I'll talk to the DZO next weekend, he does a lot of the tandems anyway. cavete terrae. -

If you know or reasonably believe you might have an STD, say you don't, and proceed to have sex with someone, that's malicious and likely a criminal act. If you have no reason to believe you have an STD and say that you were tested, you're a lying asshole, but it's quite a different thing. Further, telling someone you're on birth control when you're not and THE WHOLE POINT is to cause them enormous damage, that's a third thing altogether. A guy with an STD is likely just trying to get laid. A better equivalence to your way of thinking would be a guy with herpes trying to intentionally infect someone just because he wants that person to be sick, and not caring about the sex. cavete terrae.

How can you possibly make a blanket statement that someone's life isn't ruined by fathering a child? You can't know other peoples' situation. There's no doubt in my mind that my life, happiness and possibly my very will to live would be destroyed by such a thing. Seriously? I had no idea you were such a drama queen. I'm selfish, hate kids, and I'm barely able to afford to skydive, which is one of the only things in my life that keeps me going. A kid would make everything worse. cavete terrae.

I never said otherwise, but now that you've brought it up, it's MUCH easier for a woman to ruin a man's life with the full support and protection of the law (either by legislation or precedent) than the other way around. Anyone who would argue otherwise is naive. Also your comparisons to stds and drunk driving are fallacious. The topic at hand is malicious deception for the benefit of self and intentional damage to another. For the record, te abortion pill trick would fall under this but could have been potentially avoided, see my original post in the thread. cavete terrae.

There is literally nothing bad enough that can happen to her for that. Cancer, paralysis, none of that is sufficient. cavete terrae.

There's a very simple solution to this sort of situation. The law needs to be that if the man wants the woman to have an abortion, and she doesn't want to, he should be able to give up all visitation and parental rights in exchange for not being responsible for anything pertaining to the kid. The woman retains absolute control over if she has the baby or not, but she'll need to decide if it's worth having without the support of the father. In cases where the father is not contacted or notified before the point where the abortion cannot be performed, he would by default not be on the hook for support unless he chooses to be a part of the child's life. cavete terrae.

And people wonder why boogies are dying... Well it's fair enough. When I was a new jumper at a Cessna/static line DZ, I looked forward to our boogie (Mullins' King Air) every year, and traveled to Eloy for the holiday boogie because otherwise I wasn't getting above 10,000' or doing more than a few loads in a day. Now with 3 (I think? Might be 4) turbine DZs within 2 hours of me I'm still excited by the IDEA of a boogie but less so about the reality of it for the most part. Typically the killer for me is lack of specialty aircraft/jumps and/or high registration fees. If the registration fee doesn't amortize by the end of the weekend and the jumps are the same as I'd be doing on any other weekend I don't see why I'd bother. However, access to rotary wings, balloons, high alt jumps, night jumps or even tailgates might be enough to get my attention so long as the costs are reasonable. Free beer doesn't do anything for me since I don't drink… meals being included is cool, I suppose. Some of his other points: Parking: Important if you're leaving regularly. If you'll park and not touch your vehicle again until you leave, less so. Lack of accommodations: Legit concern in a lot of climates. I might be a bit of a pussy but with summers here there's no goddamned way I'm gonna sleep in a tent when it's still 90°F at midnight, I'd never get any rest. Also I'd likely be eaten by a snake. Lack of packing areas: Honestly haven't run into this personally so I couldn't give a commentary. Theft: Legit. People are the worst. Fees (discussed above) Long calls: I'm not a 20 jumps-per-day jumper on my budget, but if I can get 7 or 8 on a "big" day I'm happy. Congested skies and landing areas: Fair enough. Other jumpers: Well… yeah. cavete terrae.
