  1. I think it is a good idea based on the intent of the canopy card and not what you are making it out to be. The idea of closing your eyes and doing a practice flare deprives you of one sense to help you better appreciate your other senses. This card, like all thing give to new jumper will require instruction to explain how to properly preform the tasks. Just because it says "Practice flares, five with eyes closed" does not mean this should all before at one time keeping your eyes closed the entire time. This was one of the first thing I tired on my new canopy on a high pull after reading. 25 Ways to Become a Better Canopy Pilot (http://parachutistonline.com/feature/25-ways-become-better-canopy-pilot). I looked in all direction to make sure the air space was clear, closed my eyes, did a practice flare, and then opened my eyes to make sure I ways still clear.
  2. http://www.performancedesigns.com/packingchart.asp# The Pulse packing size is between the 150 and 170 pack size for a 9 cell PD canopy. http://www.flyaerodyne.com/sport/flash/store/orderforms/selectorh.asp Icon I-5 is made for 150-168 ft Aerodyne canopy. So, it seems like it should be a good fit.
  3. It's funny you ask because I just heard Brian Germain talking about this on Skydive Radio episode 14. When you hold the canopy in deep brakes the nose of the canopy pitches up and increased the angle of attack. At this point there is good tension on all the suspension and steering lines. If you rapidly return to full flight, the nose of the canopy pitches back down to it's normal full flight. When this happens the tension on the suspension lines is briefly removed as the canopy is moving towards the ground faster than your body. As a result you briefly have no control over the flight of the canopy. When your bodies decent catches up with the canopy the tension is restored. If tension is restored unevenly it will cause a turn in the canopy. Similar to what happens when you shift your weight for harness turns.
  4. For accuracy. S turns are a good skill to have but they are frowned on during a normal landing pattern. Speak to an instructor at your dz, you can do a few on a hop and pop where it is only you in the sky. If you are the only person in the air aiming at a target and can fly whatever way you please, then most people should be able to land close to it. As far as I understand it, the accuracy component of the license is not just about being able to land within a set distance of a target, but being able to do this reliable while flying a normal landing pattern on any given jump. It is about learning how the equipment you are using flies in different conditions and setting up your pattern at the correct spot and altitude to land accurately. Below 1000 feet your turns should be limited to a 90 from downwind to base and a 90 from base to final.
  5. Having never been to Eloy I do not know what type of briefing is given to first time or returning visiting jumpers. Are there certain things that Eloy, or any drop zone, could be doing to better inform visitors of the local conditions and rules? What are the crucial pieces of information that a visiting jumper needs to know?
  6. Getting used to the wind can be a challenge, but unless you are physically not strong enough to hold on, it just takes time and practice. First off, take your time. If you are having trouble let the instructor know and make sure you are not rushing to get into position. When climbing out of a plane I look at it similar to any other climbing I have done in the past. Whether it is climbing a tree, a ladder, or a rock wall, it is always a good rule of thumb to keep three solid points of contact whenever possible (i.e. two hands and a foot or two feet and a hand touching). Once you are in a solid position you can move to two contact points if needed.
  7. I noticed the Phantom X helmet from Square1 has not been added to the database. http://square1.com/manufacturers/square1/p520.asp Skimmer suits are also missing from the database. http://www.skimmersuits.com/The-suits.html
