miniabbot 0 #1 August 22, 2006 Hey all i am seriously considering starting up and i would appreciate any advice be it where to take classes or (especially) equipment. I would of couse like to spend as little money as possible but need good gear. I just took my first jump on the north shore of hawaii and im hooked. Currently living in rochester, ny. AggieDave 6 #2 August 22, 2006 There are some good DZs in your area, go hang out at them for a day and figure out which DZ you like the best. As for gear, that should be the last thing on your mind at this point. After you get around 20 jumps you'll probably want to start looking at gear. At that point you'll have a little bit of an idea of what you want to get and your instructors (as well as the DZs S&TA) can help you make that decision so you get something that is appropiate for your skill level and goals.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." AggieDave 6 #5 August 22, 2006 Quote im me of course... whatdaya mean? Folks on DZ.com are realively untrusting of new comers with no information in their profiling asking a question that could be a "trolling" question. e.g. asking which DZ in NY is the best. If you're trolling, you know this, if you're not, don't take offense, fill out some profile info and welcome to skydiving (and to DZ.com).--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." AndyMan 7 #6 August 22, 2006 There are two DZ's near Rochester NY. I've done many jumps at Frontier Skydivers near Newfane, and have many fond memories. I believe they fly a twin Otter, so that's a big plus. www.frontierskydivers.com. There's also Rochester Skydivers in Malone, which will be a bit closer, but they only fly 182's. I've never been there. _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
jimmytavino 16 #7 August 22, 2006 Greetings..... well friend, here is some wisdom,,,, If you're looking for cheap, take up gardening.... I also am in Rochester NY... a great place to live, work, study, and Not bad for skydiving either... The $$$$$$ spent on your recent trip to hawaii could have gotten you well into AFF, but at least you did get one skydive out of it... I'm curious as to the altitude of your jump??? and whether or not you jumped at a place which caters mostly to the tourist business, or whether the place also has experienced jumpers.. Around here,,, My vote would be for Frontier Skydivers, located west of Roch by 70 miles or so, in Niagara County... Great people, the BEST student gear available, hugely experienced staff... I started jumping there as a visitor/guest in the early 70's and became a member, by the early 80's. Now I jump there almost exclusively,( and contribute by working as a video person...) save for the occasional visit to Finger Lakes Skydivers, near Ithaca, to visit old friends... Frontier is currently using a King Air however and Not an Otter.. Consider yourself invited to visit so.... # 1 you can check out the place, and # 2 so we can check YOU out...... Beyond a first jump experience, there is a TON of information you need to learn.... Some of it ( instruction, gear, lift tickets,) WILL cost you $$$$$..... But there is much to be learned, which is cheerfully shared between experienced members and newcomers to the club... and at No charge.... other than the willingness on the part of the student, to listen, take direction, follow safety procedures, ask questions, and "play nicely"..... You can P M me for travel directions. Skydiving in this part of the country, during the Autumn months is just gorgeous.. .... Congrats on your jump # 1...may it be the start to a fun and rewarding hobby...Jimmy A 3914 D 12122

miniabbot 0 #9 August 22, 2006 First off thanks for all the info guys and gals. My jump in Hawaii was with Pacific Skydiving and it was from 13.5 with an instructor with 22k jumps. I forgot his name, but he told me he has been spending his life just going around the world jumping and teaching jumping when he needs money. The pre jump brief was.... brief, but since i was just riding and couldnt affect the outcome either way it wasnt too too bothering.
Sockpuppet 0 #10 August 23, 2006 Quotebut since i was just riding and couldnt affect the outcome either way Oh believe me you could have if you wanted to. You'd have probably got a right hook to the face if you'd started to dick around though. ------ Two of the three voices in my head agree with you. It might actually be unanimous but voice three only speaks Welsh.
